One English woman is claiming marijuana saved her life.

Joy Smith was given six weeks to live after she was diagnosed with stomach and bowel cancer. The 52-year-old told The Coventry Telegraph:

“When you’re told you have six weeks to live you’ll try anything, trust me.”

So when her friends approached her with the suggestion of trying cannabis oil, Joy was willing to test it out. Although skeptical, she ingested the THC cannabis oil tablet her friends researched for her.

Before being introduced to THC, Joy had been doing chemotherapy treatments three days a week, every two weeks. However, she paused her treatment after she developed sepsis. Regarding the THC, Joy said:

“I was looking for reassurance. I wanted to know if anyone had ever been cured by it.

I was taking it on and off. But when I’d been having it three to five times a week, the scans were getting better and then when I stopped taking it the scans showed no change.”

Much to her surprise and relief, the cannabis oil jumpstarted her recovery.

And two years after her initial diagnosis, Joy is nearly cancer free.

Unlike parts of the United States, cannabis is illegal throughout the United Kingdom.

Although there are limited studies on the correlation of the treatment of cancer with cannabis, the American Cancer Society reports that there may be a link. The few studies have covered varying topics that have found that the inhalation of cannabis may be helpful in reducing pain and treating nausea. However, more recently they reported that:

[S]cientists reported that THC and other cannabinoids such as CBD slow growth and/or cause death in certain types of cancer cells growing in lab dishes. Some animal studies also suggest certain cannabinoids may slow growth and reduce spread of some forms of cancer.

More research is necessary to discover the true possibilities of cannabis and THC, however, Joy has a message for the skeptics:

“I want to tell everybody. Cannabis oil should be legalised for medical purposes – people are dying and the chemotherapy isn’t curing them.”

Joy said:

“I’m a walking miracle! The doctors couldn’t believe it, they call me Wonder Woman. It’s impossible, but I’ve beaten science.”

She added: “My friends kept saying if anyone was going to beat it, it would be me, and I did – I’m still here.”
