According to her family, Demi Helenius is always good about calling and texting to let people know where she is.

That’s why police were so alarmed when Demi’s cellphone showed up at a Dairy Queen 100 miles away from where she was last seen.

As Fox 12 News reports, the 23-year-old woman from Rock Creek, Oregon spent Saturday in Portland at a self-help conference. When the Landmark Worldwide Forum ended at 10 p.m. and Demi didn’t call or come home, her family began to worry.

Authorities noticed that Demi’s black Volkswagen Beetle was also missing and tried calling her cell phone at about 11 p.m. that night. But the person who answered was a Dairy Queen employee in Creswell, Oregon — a town more than 100 miles south of Portland.

According to KGW News, the Dairy Queen employee explained that a man had handed over the phone as he passed through the drive-thru. He’d given the fast food worker the phone in the hopes of reuniting it with its owner.

Using the restaurant’s surveillance video, police identified the license plate of the man who turned over the phone. In the interview that followed, he told investigators he’d found the phone in a parking lot near the Dairy Queen.

On Monday, tips led authorities to Demi’s car, which had been abandoned in Cottage Grove, Oregon — a small town about nine miles south of where her phone was located. Though there seemed to be no evidence of foul play, the car will be examined more thoroughly at the state crime lab.

In the meantime, police continue to look for clues to Demi’s disappearance, including at the conference she attended Saturday.

Melody Helenius, Demi’s mother, says that it’s not like her daughter to vanish without talking to anyone. She told Fox 12 she was worried that Demi’s trusting nature might have played a part in her disappearance:

“She’s a vibrant 23-year-old, she runs marathons, she writes music. She’s trusting to a point, which may be a detriment,” Melody said.
