When a Michigan wife confronted her husband about having an extramarital affair in June 2017, she never guessed that it was with a 14-year-old girl that he’d been abusing.
She also never could have known the extreme lengths he’d go through to cover it up.
According to the Detroit Free Press, James Philip Chelekis was a Kentwood Public Schools teacher when he started abusing a student in his math class.
The relationship lasted for more than a year before wife Amanda caught on that something was wrong in her marriage. But when she confronted him on June 27, it nearly cost her her life.Kent County Police Department
After the confrontation, Chelekis attempted to kill his wife, according to People. And it all started out with what seemed to be a sweet kiss, she told the court:
“He came out of the closet behind me, my head was tipped back, resting on the back of the chair with my eyes closed. Standing behind me, he kissed my forehead and slit my throat from one side to the other.”
She grabbed the knife with her hands, causing serious injury as she attempted to defend herself, Mlive reports. Their daughters, aged 3 and 5, were in the home at the time.
The former school teacher then started reading his wife Bible verses, as she struggled to control the bleeding. All the while, he was sending text messages to the student that he was abusing.
Luckily, Amanda was trained as a nurse and knew how to pinch her artery to prevent herself from bleeding out, People reports.
She explained to Mlive:
“I told him I was going to die very soon if he didn’t so something, and he would regret it the rest of his life.”
And she unknowingly had someone on her side — the teenage victim. The student, in a reply to Chelekis’ texts, instructed him to contact police after slitting his wife’s throat.
After an hour of letting his wife suffer, he finally did. Amanda was taken to the hospital where she was treated for severe injuries to her neck and hands.
Her husband was arrested and later pleaded no contest to assault with intent to murder for the attack and two charges of first-degree criminal sexual conduct for his relationship with the student, Mlive reported. This week, he was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison for the attempted murder and 15 to 40 years for the sexual abuse.
Amanda said that she survived the ordeal by thinking about her two young daughters, who were in the home at the time of the attack. She admitted to Mlive that she thought he would kill them next if she died.
The wife has since divorced her husband and plans to tell her children about him once they’re old enough. On Tuesday, the mom said in court, according to People:
“Someday when it is developmentally appropriate, I have to tell [the children] their father is not with us because he tried to kill me.”
Amanda said she’s thankful to the middle school girl, who helped convince Chelekis to call for help.
