Wendy Williams is facing a new obstacle when it comes to her health, but she doesn’t seem to be worried.
Williams, 54, opened about her lymphedema diagnosis during her daytime talk show on July 8, ABC News reports.
The host introduced the subject while clearing up rumors about her love life.
“Lymphedema, by the way, I’ve been diagnosed. “
According to the National Cancer Institute, lymphedema “is the build-up of fluid in soft body tissues that occurs when the lymph system is damaged or blocked.”
There are two types of lymphedema— primary and secondary.
Primary lymphedema is due to the abnormal development of the lymph system. On the other hand, secondary lymphedema is caused by damage to the lymph system:
Damage may be a result of infection, injury, cancer, removal of lymph nodes, radiation to the affected area, or scar tissue from chemotherapy.
Symptoms include swelling of an arm or leg, trouble moving limbs, itching or burning of the legs, and loss of hair.
Upon hearing the news, fans gasped. They were seemingly taken aback by the host’s casual reveal of a new medical issue. In response, she attempted to calm them down by making light of a machine she uses to reduce the swelling.
“It’s not going to kill me, but I do have a machine — and how dare you talk about the swelling of it all. I’ve got it under control and if [the swelling in] my feet and lower things never go all the way down, at least I have this machine. I sit for 45 minutes a day. And believe me, it’s the best party entertainer ever. Everybody who comes over wants to do this.””
As Dearly previously reported, this reveal comes after Williams struggles with Graves’ disease, an autoimmune disorder affecting her thyroid, substance abuse. Williams is also in the midst of a divorce from her estranged husband, Kevin Hunter.
