A Florida girl and her family walking in Yellowstone National Park were surprised when a wild bull bison began charging at them.
According to a press release from the National Park Service, “a group of approximately 50 people were within five [to] 10 feet of the bison for at least 20 minutes before eventually causing the bison to charge the group.”
The moment was caught on video and shared on Twitter:
I visited Yellowstone 2 years ago, there are signs everywhere reading “Do not approach wildlife” but since people don’t read signs…..

In the video, the bison is seen walking along the hill, seemingly eating, when, in just a split second, it charged at a group of people.
Sadly, while others managed to flee, a young girl couldn’t get out of the bison’s path in time. According to ABC News, the bison “tossed her in the air.”
The incident took place “near Observation Point Trail in the Old Faithful Geyser area.”
The child’s family quickly sought medical attention before she was transferred to Old Faithful Medical Clinic. She has since been released from the clinic.
As the press release from the National Park Service reveals, the incident occurred in the afternoon hours of July 22. The girl is just 9 years old. The press released continued:
No citations have been issued. The incident is still under investigation.
Wildlife in Yellowstone National Park are wild. When an animal is near a trail, boardwalk, parking lot, or in a developed area, give it space. Stay 25 yards away from all large animals – bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose, and coyotes and at least 100 yards away from bears and wolves. If need be, turn around and go the other way to avoid interacting with a wild animal in close proximity.
As ABC News reports, the extent of the 9-year-old’s injuries is unclear.
