Suffice it to say “Modern Family” star Ariel Winter isn’t exactly on great terms with her mother these days. Since she was emancipated in 2015, the now 19-year-old actress has entirely distanced herself from her mom, Chrystal Workman.
However, the process wasn’t pretty. Winter accused her mother of being emotionally and physically abusive. In fact, a “Modern Family” insider told TMZ that the entire cast and crew disliked Winter’s mom:
Chrystal would sit on set and watch Ariel like a hawk — and then berate her for her physical appearance, saying her ears were too big and she looked ugly in her clothes. She also blocked Ariel from eating anything but egg whites and raw veggies.
[…] the mom’s obsession with Ariel’s diet was so extreme … crew members contrived a plan to “sneak” the 14-year-old food (like grilled cheese sandwiches) when her mom wasn’t looking.
But since Winter’s independence, she’s made it a point to let the world know she loves her body regardless of what her mother may or may not think:
And she’s not shy about sharing her body with her 3.4 million followers either:
Naturally, her recent risqué outfits have garnered a lot of attention — much of which has been negative.
“She needs to grow up. I would tell her to dress properly, be the beautiful person she is. I feel sad that she feels the need to expose herself when it’s not necessary. Ariel is smart, beautiful and talented. She is a legitimate actress. She does not need to do this. She is beautiful with her clothes on.”
During Winter’s legal push for emancipation, Winter alleged her mother attempted to “sexualize” her. However, Workman denied those allegations when asked by the publication she was speaking to, saying:
“I would not do that.”
But it wasn’t long before Winter decided she had something to say back this time, tweeting:
What's sad is that you lie consistently. Also, why is it that you only choose to talk to me through the press? I'm doing just fine. ?Toxic.

Even her sister — who took over Winter’s guardianship after she was emancipated — gave it right back, telling Page Six the comment didn’t surprise her:
“It’s just the expectation. My mother has always been dreaming of the spotlight, which is why she had two daughters … I think this is her way of keeping her name in the headlines.”
She continued, saying that Winter “has no interest in our birth mother.” She also said that as far as having any concern for Winter or her revealing clothes, she had none:
“She is a classy, smart, beautiful woman inside and out and is a great, positive role model for women everywhere — especially to my daughters.”
Winter is set to continue filming “Modern Family” for two more seasons, but more life-changing is that the 19-year-old is set to attend college in the fall.
