Mom Fights for Change After a High-Speed Police Chase Left Her Toddler With ‘Basically’ Shaken Baby Syndrome

A Maryland family is pushing for change after their 3-year-old boy was seriously injured in a police chase crash.

According to WBAL11, last week, the Kirts family was traveling on I-95 in Philidelphia, when their trip to New York was cut short.

In an instant, the driver’s side mirror of their Chrysler Sebring had been torn off and their vehicle was struck repeatedly.

Meghan Kirts, who was driving at the time of the crash, said:

“He (the suspect) just kept going, the cops came from different angles hitting us all at once and I’m holding on to the steering wheel, panicked, like you’re either going to die, flip or worse.”

In addition to her vehicle being totaled, everyone inside of it sustained injuries. Her son’s injuries were the worst of all.

As WBAL11 reports, the crash occurred as police chased a man for probation violations.

Kirts’ son, David Kirts, flew out of his car seat into the front console during the crash. He was taken to a children’s hospital in Philadelphia in critical condition.

According to Kirts, David suffers from multiple skull fractures, a spinal cord injury, and multiple brain bleeds that might later require surgery. Less than a week ago, doctors weren’t sure if he would make it, WBAL11 reports.

According to WBAL11, David will likely continue on the course of “basically” shaken baby syndrome, which means that his left brain and his body got shaken so bad, he’ll never be the same.

Kirts said:

“One minute’s fine and the next minute you’re seeing your son fly through the air.”

Now, David is legally disabled and his family is left with a load of medical bills they can’t afford.

Further, Philadelphia police are still looking for the suspect and aren’t sure if he was ever in the car they were chasing in the first place.

While Kirts is happy David is back in their Middle River home, she is frustrated that she has had no communication with the police, whom she feels is responsible.

Now Kirts and her family have made it their mission to make a change.

As WBAL11, she said:

We have already hired an attorney and we’re going to pursue this to the fullest and before I’m done, there’s going to be new police procedures and resources in place we want justice for David. We deserve answers.”

A GoFundMe has been started to raise money for the family.

  1. this is the dream of most cops. a high speed chase so they can show how tough they are. and if you are in the way that is tough shit. then you are on your own. high speed chase should be outlawed in most cases, they just put civilians in danger and in most cases the police have no insurance to take care of the victims

  2. A high speed chase in a residential killed two teen girls. Ran the stop sign, didn’t have sirens on. The police got away free. It happens al the time unfortunately. What happened to ‘to serve and protect’?

  3. But why the heck wasn’t he properly fastened in a child seat?? If he would have been, he at least wouldn’t have flown out of his seat.
However, something does need to be done about police chases. They should never be allowed to dangerously chase a car that might or might not be someone they’re looking for. Especially if it’s for minor things. The police department, from what I’ve read here, should be held partially responsible at least.

  4. THE POLICE DEARTENT SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL MEDICAL BILLS AND FOR MONEY FOR THIS FAMILY TO LIVE ON FROM NOW ON. OWN IT COPS YOU DID THIS FOR WHAT SOME ONE BREAKIKNG PROBATION. WAS IT WORYTH IT TO THIS FAMILY WHAT YOU DID TO THEM? PAY UP YOU OE THEN.

  5. Really! When my son was young he figured out how to get out of his car seat! I was constantly stopping to put him back in! He is ADHD & low spectrum Autistic & he could get out of his car seat! It is not his parents fault! It is the fault of the one running from the police & the police! They owe this family! Pay the medical bills & a settlement because they will be taking care of him & their own injuries!

  6. @Dave barney, you sound like a fool! Cops want to drive fast so they can prove they are tough?! You are an idiot. No insurance? Where do you come up with these “facts”? It’s pathetic that you liberal morons want to blame the police instead of the criminal. And what is driving in a residential? It happens ‘al’ the time? Please finish sentences and proof read. My first grader can compose better sentences than most of what I’ve read on this post.
