On April 17, a pregnant Indiana mother was waiting for her boyfriend outside a Merrillville thrift store with her two children when something terrible happened.
According to WGN 9, the trio stayed in the boyfriend’s white sedan while he ran into a Plato’s Closet.
But as they waited inside the car, the infant daughter found the boyfriend’s loaded gun that was left inside the vehicle. Upon grabbing the gun, the little girl reportedly discharged the firearm.WGN 9
The bullet struck her 21-year-old pregnant mother.
As a result of the accidental shooting, the mother was taken to the hospital where she was listed in critical but stable condition.
Detective Sgt. James Bogner told WGN 9 that the girl was traumatized after accidentally firing the gun:
“[She] had no idea what she had done and she was very scared.”
Witnesses also told WGN 9 that even though the authorities have ruled the shooting accidental, there may be more to the story.
Others around the area at the time said they rushed to the woman’s aid when they heard screaming:
“What I saw was like a lady, she was almost about to fall, she was bleeding out, a bucket of blood was just on the ground and I saw her two kids just standing there.”
Another witness added:
“We grabbed the kids out of the backseat, the little boy who was still in the car and we took the little girl from the mom because she was holding her hand and we took them inside just to try and comfort them the best we could.”
At that point, a third witness revealed that the boyfriend, who is the little girl’s father, ran out of the store and started asking the injured mother if she “tried to kill herself.”
After the shooting, the boyfriend was taken into custody on suspicion of child endangerment. The two children were also taken from their home and placed into protective custody while their mother was in the hospital.
It’s unclear if the expecting mother has been discharged and reunited with her two children.
