During the MTV Music and Television Awards, Dwayne “The Rock”  Johnson centered his acceptance speech as the 2019 Generation Icon Award Honoree on kindness.

Johnson emphasized the importance of being your authentic self with a story about his first few years in Hollywood as a half-black and half-Samoan wrestler. He said:

“The most powerful thing we can be is ourselves.”

He noted how industry leaders tried to change the things that he loved most about himself including his well-known nickname, “The Rock.”

The “Jumanji” actor soon made a career-changing decision. He said:

“I wasn’t going to conform to Hollywood. Hollywood was going to conform to me.”

Johnson said that decision brought him to where he is now, receiving the Generation Icon award at 47 years old. He said he’s proud to be himself, but that’s not enough.

The wrestling icon said:

“There’s another side to being your authentic self, your true self. And that’s the side that the magic is on, that’s the side that’s gold.”

Johnson continued to say that being successful is also about how you treat others.

The father of three continued:

“And while yes it’s important to be yourself, you’ve got to recognize the joy and the responsibility of bring everybody with you.

You bring every body with us and you do that by being kind by being compassionate by being inclusive and by straight up just being good to people because that matters.”

Johnson said that being nice is the true key to being powerful and influential.

He concluded his speech with a quote:

“It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice.”

The honoree also thanked MTV, his fans, and his family for his success.
