In a personal video released on YouTube, “The Real” host Jeannie Mai explained why she didn’t speak to her mom for eight years.
The mother and daughter had a major falling-out when Jeannie was 16 years old, and they didn’t talk again until the co-host was 24 — all because of Jeannie’s heartbreaking story of childhood abuse.
The now-40-year-old said she was sexually abused by a family member when she was 9, and her relationship with her mom took a turn for the worst.

The TV personality tried to confide in her mother about the scarring experience, but when she refused to talk about it, Jeannie couldn’t heal. She shared:
“I just remember one day this person sitting really close to me, we were playing video games, and he started to touch my thigh. […] I also was just stunned because I had never been intimately touched like that, so I couldn’t tell if it was wrong. I just knew I was noticing it. I was almost narrating it in my head.”
In her YouTube series, “Hello Hunnay With Jeannie Mai,” the talk show host said she and her mom are now opening up for the first time to talk about how the alleged abuse affected their relationship.

“I remember him pulling me into that shower, and it was the first time I have seen a grown man and what he looked like. […] I remember him telling me to touch him in certain ways. […] This happened every day for a few weeks, and then it turned into months, and I remember one year going by. I didn’t want to say anything because I was afraid. […] I began to get angry because now I’m telling my mom that he’s taking off my clothes, and you said, ‘I don’t believe you.'”
Jeannie was hurt when she felt like her mom turned a blind eye to her sexual abuse.
Her mom’s denial caused her to run away from home at 16.
