This is Anthony.
He was put in foster care at 9 years old. Now 16, he didn’t think he would ever be adopted. In fact, he didn’t want to be adopted because he didn’t believe there was someone out there who would really love him.
However, that all changed when he met a woman named Bennie Berry in November 2016. Berry happened to be his high school English teacher.
According to KBMT, Anthony was the one to mention the adoption first. Berry told KBMT that Anthony asked if he could show her a website just three months after they met.
Berry said she initially thought he was joking about the adoption, but gave him an ultimatum. She explained:
“Finish your assignment and then you can show me the website. Then later I found out that it was really an option to adopt him, so we pushed forward.”
Berry had never been a mom before the adoption became official earlier this November.
Neither Berry nor Anthony could sleep the night before adoption day. Anthony told ABC News:
“I told mom, I was like, ‘I don’t think I’m going to be able to sleep.’ She was like, ‘I don’t think I am either.’”
Now, Berry couldn’t be more excited to have someone to call her mom for the rest of her life:
“I have a son. I’m more than elated. I have a son for the rest of my life.”
And Anthony couldn’t be more excited to have Berry as his forever mom. He said:
“How many kids my age get adopted nowadays?”
He gave some advice:
“If you have ever thought about adoption or didn’t want to be adopted, actually try it because you never know. Take into consideration that someone that doesn’t love you, there is always someone that will love you, so just give it chance.”
The two are now the family they never thought they would have, and it all happened just in time for the holidays.
