Indiana 11-year-old Gabe Wattley wanted to buy his mother a new coat for Christmas but only had $20 when his family headed to Target to shop.
The boy’s mother, LaDonna Wattley, said she had no idea that her son had noticed she was in need of a new jacket. She told Fox 59:
“For the last two years, the coat I was wearing was all shredded up inside. The lining was shredded up inside. I didn’t even know he realized that. I didn’t say anything about it. You do what you have to do.”
Gabe said he found a coat at the store that was out of his price range. That’s when a woman approached him and offered to contribute $60 so he could afford it.
LaDonna was at the store with her son but didn’t overhear the interaction. She was told to look away momentarily as the woman handed the cashier the money. She said:
“People who were in line were kind of smiling and nodding and I noticed some of the Target employees. He’s like ‘cover your eyes mom, cover your eyes.’ I didn’t know what was going on. I just did what I was told.”
She had no idea that her son had purchased the coat, and her genuine surprise was captured in a video taken by the family.

LaDonna was moved to tears by her son’s gift. She said:
“He had actually bought me a winter coat. For a lot of reasons that, it choked me up.”
Her son said that he hoped his gift showed that he loves and appreciates his mom, he told Fox 59.
Gabe also noted that the woman at the store also offered to buy a hat and gloves for the mom, but he turned her down. He said:
“I didn’t want her paying any more money cause that was basically her money.”
LaDonna said she’s very thankful to the kind stranger who helped her son buy the winter coat.
