Discovery Channel “Storm Chasers” star Joel Taylor has died at 38, according to reports.

The news of the cast member’s passing was announced on Twitter by former costar Reed Timmer:

According to People, Taylor joined the cast of “Storm Chasers” in 2008 on Timmer’s team, TornadoVideos.Net. The two attended the University of Oklahoma together where Taylor studied meteorology.

Teams appearing on the reality series documented storm chasing in Tornado Alley in the south-central United States, which has a disproportionately high frequency of tornados, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information.

“Storm Chasers” was canceled after five seasons in 2012, reports People.

The cause of Taylor’s death remains unknown, though it is not believed to be storm-related, People reports.

Taylor’s storm chasing team, Team Western Oklahoma Chaser, shared their condolences on social media. The post (which has since been taken down) was later updated to state a medical examiner was reviewing the cause of death.

The update read in part:

Many people have asked how Joel passed away. For the sake of no false information and repeated reply’s to the question. This is my reply. There is no answer at this time. The medical professionals are trying to determine the cause.

Tributes have poured in from friends and fans since Taylor’s passing.

In the Facebook post, Taylor’s storm chasing team also asked that his family be considered during this time:

I’d hope we would all just pray for them at this time because I know they have the same questions and are hurting deeply at his sudden passing. If you knew or know his parents and family you would understand that they are the kindest and sweetest people and are in great pain for the loss of their child and brother.

Adding: “Please lift them up in prayers and support.”
