An Indiana school district investigated a troubling fight between students and a teacher at Clay High School in South Bend after footage of the incident went viral.

According to the South Bend Tribune, a student posted a now-deleted video of a brawl that broke out between several kids in a classroom last week.

The video, however, led to various controversies when a teacher can be seen stepping into the fight.

An educator identified as Dwight Mood tried breaking up the attack but responded to the violence by striking the teens.

Watch the clip below:

On Friday WNDU, posted the video to Facebook. The teacher who was recorded repeatedly hitting students and holding one in a chokehold was placed on administrative leave.

South Bend Schools released a statement following the social media post, reports WSBT:

The video shared on Facebook was troubling and does not reflect the safe learning environment in our schools.

Safety is our top priority; we do not condone violent behavior among students or staff …

We have taken appropriate measures consistent with the student code of conduct. Pending the outcome of our investigation, the staff member involved has been placed on administrative leave.

However, several parents of students at Clay High School said the administration should stand behind Mood — who’s also seen in the footage trying to end the fight between two students.

One parent wrote on Facebook:

My daughter showed this to me after school. I am so sure the teacher is going to be hauled into court for this crap. Now, someone please tell me how in the hell a teacher is suppose to defend themselves and other students? …

My daughter goes to Clay. I am sorry, but I am for the teacher in this one. The kids, their mouths, attitudes, and entitlement issues are out of control. Let my daughter step to a grown person like that or not have respect for a whole classroom of other people; she won’t like what she comes home too.

Another person wrote:

Mood is probably one of the best teachers out there. He was under attack and did what he had to do. I stand with him and his actions.

An online petition was created for the teacher. Online supporters said it was “bogus” for “one of the few teachers that take their time with students” to be “fired” for protecting himself and other kids.

As previously reported by Dearly, Mood is the second teacher who was defended for punching a student in the classroom.

Clay High School is conducting an internal investigation and has notified authorities following the incident.

The petition has gained as many as 3,287 signatures.

The teacher was attempting to break up a brawl. It’s the kids who should be suspended. Just maybe they should spend a night or two juvenile detention. That happen to my grandson and he spent 10 days in lockup. It straightened his butt right out when all his freedoms were taken away.

      Yep juvenile detention. Little punks

I agree! Seeme to me the teacher was trying to break up the fight and protect himself..

When I was in high school, I witnessed a senior beating another student. My biology teacher stepped in and was punched multiple times. He ( the biology teacher ) never lifted a hand against either student, but was able to defuse the situation. In the video it looks as if there are three students involved. As a ” Monday morning quarterback ” I think Mr. Mood should have called someone else to assist in ending the fight. As a former teacher, I probably would have done the same thing. Mr. Mood should be returned to the classroom. He stepped into a dangerous situation without regard for his own safety, to protect the lives of his students.

School kids today receive no discipline for their actions, and they know it. They are entitled, mouthy, misbehaved young adults. This teacher was brave to try and break up this fight and he did nothing out of line for the situation he was in. If he didn’t approach the fight but instead sought additional adult help, the fight could have gotten more out of hand and then he would be punished for not stopping the fight more quickly. He should be returned immediately and acknowledged for being the kind teacher he appears to be. What about the students, are they out put on “dangerous leaves of absence”? It is nonsense and I applaud 95% of the teachers out there. Schools have become battlefields. So very, very sad!

I find it somewhat amusing that this teachers life be turned upside down for defending himself and other students but at the same time our judicial system would put these juveniles on trial as ADULTS if they break the law! If they are going to stand up like a man against this teacher and assault him and other students then the chips MUST fall where they may! I think they believe they have some kind of entitlement to get away with acting this way and its time they are put back in their place,so good for you teacher! and thank you for trying to defend other victims in that classroom!

I am a former teacher, daughter of a former teacher and I feel he did what he had to do. As a 5’4” woman, I have had to step between two male students who were fighting. I also know that some female students tried to push my mother around and she had to push back because there were three of them who declared she couldn’t tell them what to do. I have to say her boss told her she would be sued but the parents totally supported her! (She had been outstanding teacher many times).

I see a teacher thing to stop a brawl and then wind up having to protect himself.

Let me get this straight. We’ve got teens in class with no shoes on. They begin fighting. A teacher steps in to break it up. At least 3 teens then attack him. That’s called ASSAULT. Now this teacher has been placed on Administrative Leave for defending himself after being ASSAULTED by 3 teens? How is this any different that a teacher defending himself against someone who comes into a school with a gun? Is he expected to just stand there and do nothing? Why are we not holding those “children” accountable? What is the legal punishment for ASSAULT? HAUL THEIR BUTTS TO JUVENILE DETENTION AND PARK THEM THERE. DON’T LET THEM OUT UNTIL THEY’VE EARNED THEIR GED. Education is not a RIGHT, it’s a privilege. If you’re going to act like animals, we’ll treat you like animals. And they wonder why so many parents are pulling their kids out of schools to homeschool them? #HOMESCHOOL #DISCIPLINE

Teacher did what he had to do Unger the circumstances, give him a break, the kids are out of control

  • Joy 2 years ago

Put this teacher back in the class room. He did what he had to do. Punish the kids that were fighting. These kids are out of control. Their parents should get some anger management classes for these kids and parenting classes for themselves. No respect . Kids now seem to think they are entitled. Wow such a shame for teachers nowadays.

I thought the poor teacher was quite restrained. he was trying to stop it but was attacked himself…I think the lads need detaining and shown what real prison is like…..they may change their tune

Throw those spoiled brats into a special class that teachers respect & consideration for other. If they don’t learn they don’t gratuate. I’d like to know where these kids think that they’re so intidled ?

  • Ohrt 2 years ago

Kids have no respect these days. They should have been expelled!! I’m for the teacher.

  • Anonymous 2 years ago

He did not attack the child until the child attacked him. Teachers have the right to defend themselves. He did nothing but try to stop a fight. No respect. Those kids need to be put in jail for assault.

It breaks my heart to see this type of behavior getting worse over the years. I am also a teacher and we are not properly trained for hand to hand combat. Minors now think they are untouchable and that they can inflict harm on others and Adults only have the right to break it up by getting in the middle and possibly be harmed themselves. This mentality that the minor is always right/protected needs to stop ?. Teacher get abused physically and verbally everyday and in many cases the children get off Scott free. It’s so troubling how our youth is loosing respect for all elders/authority.

I ask that we use this video as a learning tool to improve our training, education and be fair to all involved. We would not take children completely out of school for a first offense so please do not fire this teacher.

    Go Teacher Mood!!!

  • Anonymous 2 years ago

The unruly kids won that one. Now they will feel free to do it again. The school should have had his back. They will surely reap what they have sown.

  • Anonymous 2 years ago

Bring this Teacher back to school at least he cared enough to do something. Kids need to learn school is for learning and not petty drama they make up.

  • Anonymous 2 years ago

What are you supposed to do? Who can get there quickly enough to back him up? The kids are out of hand! He should not be punished for trying to break it up!!

  • Anonymous 2 years ago

Kids and too many people today with a lack of respect for each others and authority!!

  • Anonymous 2 years ago

The teacher was defending himself. It saddens me that a school will blame the teacher rather than these kids who were clearly at fault. The kids should be suspended or expelled and the teacher given a medal.

more and more we are seeing “students” that have no respect for the teachers or others. when they start this kind of violence in schools, the teacher should be given unfettered authority to stop the situation with any means necessary.

    I support the Teacher

Teacher should be praised by making him Teacher of the year for doing exactly what needed to be done to promptly defuse the situation that could have turned into a classroom riot had he done nothing. He deserves an Award for his bravery for not considering the harm that could have came on to himself but didnt take a second thought as he protected all his other students from harm!! The students involved in this fight deserve to be charged with assault charges to the fullest extent of the law to show other students through the entire USA the consequences of their actions r not Tollerable in our schools. Where the Hell R the minds of the people of authority that run these schools? Wake Up!! There must be consequences for students bad choices of their actions or they will never grow up knowing right from wrong. Teachers need to be able to do wat ever is necessary at any givin moment to keep order in their classrooms. Students need to know they just may get their ass kicked by their teacher if they become out of control. Its absolutely not tolerated. Punish the students & Award the teacher. Use this example thru out all schools in the US including the disiplinary actions the students involved receive. Due Justice onto the ones who deserve it . Not the Teacher. Teach the students their first life lesson in the real world a lesson that will hopefully teach them respect towards others especially of their elders & of authority. Charge the students to the fullest extent of the law will allow making an example out of them just may have an affect on every school in our country. Show those Brats who is Boss in School & give that Teacher an Award that will go nation wide to every school. Let him know he did the most right thing he could have done to show those students that he was in charge.

I was a former Marine Corps JROTC Assistant Instructor and 2 years later took over as In School Suspension Manager at a high school in Montgomery Alabama. My husband was the Senior Marine Instructor. We had a ZERO tolerance for bad behavior of ANY KIND! We had ONE fight in ROTC and it was quelled immediately by my husband! I am less than 5’2” and am not afraid of snot nosed winy punk kid(s). I demand respect and never tolerated disrespect. As an adult I demand respect and a kid EARNS my respect!
I had 2 girls who got into a fight in the hall over a boy who looked at one of the girls “with lust in his eyes” as the girlfriend told me.These girls didn’t even KNOW EACH OTHER! They were sent to ISS for 5 days stray! I had cubicles for each kid but also a kindergarten table with tiny chairs in front of my desk. I made both girls sit at the kiddie table and said to them “since you want to act like little brats, I’ll treat you accordingly. You will sit next to each other for 5 days. You will eat together for 5 days. And you will do your schoolwork together for 5 days! And since you don’t even KNOW each other, you will spend 5 days getting know each other”! At the end of those 5 days they were the best of friends. The one girl dumped the “loser boyfriend “ and now 11 years later they are still best friends and even stood up in each other’s weddings! They still keep in touch and always end our conversations with I love you Mrs J!
Teachers get little respect today and administrators don’t stand up to the kids or for the teachers.
Call me crazy but I applaud Mr Mood! I stand beside him 100%! Parents….this behavior starts at home! Be a PARENT and NOT your kids best friend!!! I have 3 grown kids with grown kids of their own. My kids would get theirs butts HANDED to them by me for this behavior or disrespecting ANY adult!!!
