Single mom Tihisha Jones worked hard for what she has, so when a carjacker attempted to steal her 2005 Honda Pilot on Tuesday — she wasn’t about to let it go without a fight.
According to ABC7NY, Jones auto-started her car in order to heat up the engine before she drove her 5-year-old son to school.
The doors should have remained locked, but somehow a carjacker found his way inside.
She spotted Bernado Santiago, 19, trying to fiddle with the car’s ignition. Only, she still had the key.
Jones opened the passenger side door but he managed it close it quickly. That’s when the mom “just had enough,” she said.
She went to the driver’s side door and yanked the teen out of the seat and onto the ground.
Jones said she was yelling in anger:
“I just kept hitting him saying, ‘You were trying to steal my car! Really? Are you serious?’ He tried to get away and tried to take off his shirt, and that’s when I sat down on him.”
The mother made a citizen’s arrest, holding him down to the ground until police could arrive. The confrontation was captured on video by a neighbor.

Jones said she was angry because she’d worked hard to save for the car:
“I had to take matters into my own hands because I work, I saved to get that car myself. I’m a single parent, I saved to get that, I saved.”
However, she said that she should have considered the fact that the carjacker could have hurt her before subduing him by herself. She said:
“I should have really thought it through, but I just reacted.”
Citizen’s arrests can be risky, according to the New York Times.
Laws on the matter vary by state, meaning you should check what’s allowed and what’s not before you try to detain a criminal.
You should also asses the danger of the situation. Sometimes catching a criminal isn’t worth it if you may be harmed in the process.
And most importantly, you should rely on police whenever possible. This time, Jones was within her rights to make a citizen’s arrest on the carjacker.
He has since been charged with petit larceny, grand larceny, and criminal stolen possession of stolen property.
