Former Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding, 47, seems to be on a redemption tour to restore her reputation 24 years after it was marred by scandal.
According to Entertainment Tonight, Harding has been doing a whirlwind of press interviews and appearances in promotion of her newly-released biopic, “I, Tonya,” which stars actress Margo Robbie.
The film shines a light on her side of the infamous Olympic scandal involving fellow skater Nancy Kerrigan, who was “kneecapped” shortly before the 1994 games.
Harding continues to deny that she hatched the plot to eliminate Kerrigan from the competition, and said in recent interviews she only “knew something was up.”
But now, her own mother is calling her a liar.
According to People, LaVona “Sandy” Golden gave a rare interview about her daughter on ABC’s “Truth and Lies: The Tonya Harding Story.”
And the mom didn’t hold back during the two-hour special, which aired on Thursday night. She claimed Harding is lying about her involvement in the 1994 attack. Golden said:
“She’s lied so much she doesn’t know what isn’t a lie anymore.”
However, Golden doesn’t exactly have a close relationship with her daughter. In the ABC special, Harding alleged that her mother was an alcoholic, who often drove her to school drunk.Artists/Facebook
The mother is depicted as abusive in “I, Tonya,” which Golden claims is inaccurate. She said:
“I didn’t abuse any of my children. Spanked? Yes, spanked. Absolutely positively, you got to show them right from wrong.”
Harding said that her mom beat her with a hairbrush, but Golden responded that she only smacked her with it and that her daughter “wouldn’t know what a beating was.”
It’s unclear why Golden decided to speak out about her daughter now, but it seems unlikely to help their already strained relationship.
Harding has previously stated that she doesn’t want to be in contact with her mother, and doesn’t want her “anywhere near” her 7-year-old son.
For now, it remains up in the air just how much Harding knew about that controversial night. Watch clips from the special below:
