At the start of the new year, actress Shay Mitchell, who is best known for her role in the hit show “Pretty Little Liars,” shared a bit of personal news with her fans. The 32-year-old actress wrote that in 2018, she “miscarried and lost the child of my hopes and dreams.”
We all have to deal with various struggles and challenges in life. And sometimes it’s easier to only showcase the good times on social media, which is what leads many people to criticize it for its lack of authenticity.
Having so many people follow me on Instagram and read my posts is both incredibly humbling and hugely uplifting. The support and affection that so many of you show me lifts me up during even my darkest days, one of which happened last year after I miscarried and lost the child of my hopes and dreams.
In the spirit of the new year, I think that we need to remember that we are all on this journey together — in good times and in bad— and to remind ourselves that we seldom really know or understand the struggles and hardships that other people are going through.
Thousands of the actress’ followers reach out in support, sharing their own experiences with miscarriage to help Mitchell feel less alone.
Now Mitchell is revealing her “rainbow after the storm.” On Instagram, Mitchell revealed that she and her boyfriend, reporter Matte Babel, are expecting a rainbow baby soon.
Does this mean I’m allowed to drive in the car pool lane at all times now?
As The Bump reports, a rainbow baby “is a baby born shortly after the loss of a previous baby due to miscarriage, stillbirth or death in infancy”:
This term is given to these special rainbow babies because a rainbow typically follows a storm, giving us hope of what’s to come.
On YouTube, Shay wrote that she’s six months along, meaning her expected due date would be sometime in late August or September.
“It’s exciting, nerve-racking, difficult and emotional all at the same time. Everyone waits for the right time to make the announcement and for me it wasn’t until I couldn’t hide it anymore and was tired of wearing oversized sweatshirts.
We’re beyond excited and looking forward to starting a family. I’ve learned so much about myself and parenthood over the past 6 months, and feel like I haven’t even scratched the surface! It’s going to be a wild ride!!”
Thousands of people, including many of her “Pretty Little Liar” costars, offered their congratulations to the mom-to-be.
