Serena Williams posted a photo from a special bonding moment she shared with her daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian, Jr. on June 13th.

The all-star tennis player uploaded a photo of her braiding the toddler’s hair on Thursday with an informative caption.

Williams wrote:

Braiding started in Africa with the Himba people of Namibia. We have been braiding our hair for centuries. In many African tribes braided hairstyles were a unique way to identify each tribe. Because of the time it would take people would often take the time to socialize.

Further, the new mom ended the post’s caption by expressing the pride she has in being able to pass down the custom to another generation.

She added:

It began with the elders braiding their children, then the children would watch and learn from them. The tradition of bonding was carried on for generations, and quickly made its way across the world. I am honored to share this bonding experience with my own daughter and add another generation of historic traditions. @olympiaohanian

Furthermore, the post attracted the attention of celebrities such as Lala Anthony, Ashley Graham, Halle Berry, and more.

Other Instagram users, who claim similar African roots as the renowned athlete, also gathered in the comments of the post.

For example, one fan wrote:

please bring Olympia and Alexis to Namibia for an amazing family holiday! She’ll love the sand dunes and you and Alexis will love the stunning views, cultures, history and the people

Additionally, another user commented:

It’s a way of life for all Africans. Our hair is a piece of art itself. Well done mama.

As Dearly reported, Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian shared in May that he needed help styling their daughter’s hair.  For example, he tweeted about applying to join a few private Facebook groups for natural hair.

There has been no update on the status of his applications or his hair styling skills. Although, it looks like the dad may want to take a few lessons from his wife.
