It would seem motherhood has been a long road for tennis star Serena Williams, who recently opened up about her experience in the February issue of Vogue.

The 36-year-old new mom, who gave birth to her daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. in September, has been candid on social media about her parenting struggles.

She often turns to her followers for advice on everyday mommy issues, from teething to breastfeeding.

But it turns out, Williams was unable to care for her daughter until six weeks after giving birth after going through some major health scares.

According to Entertainment Tonight, the trouble first started during Williams’s labor, when her baby’s heart rate dropped extremely low.

Doctors decided to opt for an emergency C-section, and the healthy baby girl was delivered a short time later. But soon, Williams had another medical emergency.

She told Vogue that she found herself gasping in order to breathe the next day during recovery. She had a history of blood clots, and told doctors she was concerned that was the problem.

Sure enough, a scan found that several blood clots had gathered in her lungs, Vogue reports. The new mom was quickly put on a blood thinner — but that then led to another health concern.

The bloods clots in her lungs caused the new mom to cough, which opened up her fresh C-section scar. And because she was on a blood thinner, there was a large amount of bleeding in her abdomen, she said.

Luckily, doctors were able to catch it when they went to close up her scar.

The series of health scares left Williams devastated and unable to help out with the baby for weeks because she was bedridden. Husband Alexis Ohanian told Vogue:

“I was happy to change diapers, but on top of everything she was going through, the feeling of not being able to help made it even harder. Consider for a moment that your body is one of the greatest things on this planet, and you’re trapped in it.”

She said the experience made her “get really down” and often left her feeling guilty.

But now, it seems the new mom is doing better than ever. She’s currently busy spending time with her baby girl and enjoying life with her new husband.

Now that she’s started to master motherhood, she said her next goal is getting back on the tennis court. As she told Vogue: “I absolutely want more Grand Slams.”
