“Real Housewives of New York City” star Jill Zarin announced over the weekend that she has lost her husband, Bobby, to thyroid cancer.
She posted an official statement on her website stating:
With the heaviest of hearts, we are devastated to share the news that our beloved Bobby Zarin passed away peacefully today surrounded by family after a courageous battle with cancer. There are no words to describe how heartbroken we are. Thank you, everyone, for all your love and support during this difficult time.
People reports that Bobby was diagnosed in 2009. He had his thyroid removed and underwent a radioactive iodine treatment, which was supposed to eradicate any remaining cancer cells after surgery. Unfortunately, his body didn’t respond to the treatment.
Before his death, Bobby told People:
“The radioactive iodine usually kills off whatever undetectable cancer cells are left in your body after surgery. We thought it was cured – and it usually is in about 93 percent of cases. But I wasn’t able to absorb the radioactive iodine. So it came back.”
His cancer returned and spread to his lungs. In 2016 Zarin told People that he developed a brain tumor. He went for surgery, but was later admitted to Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York City.
“He is not going down without a fight. We’re hoping for a miracle.”
Zarin said that she remained by Bobby’s side, doing everything she could for her husband, but his illness also took its toll on her.
“I’m in shock. I’m in physical shock. I’ve lost 8 lbs. already. He was doing well for a very, very long time. Then the cancer came back in his brain last fall and since then, it’s been one thing after another.”
Zarin had just posted photos on Instagram in honor of her 18th wedding anniversary earlier this month.
Happy 18th! Anniversary to the love of my life Bobby Zarin. Bobby is the most perfect man I know. He never loses anything, never forgets anything and when I think he is wrong… he is always right! I will post some photos over the last 20 years… truly a Love Story.
Zarin’s daughter, Ally Shapiro, also posted photos on her Instagram account of her stepfather.
We ❤️ Bobby… thank you for giving me such a wonderful family and being the most incredible step-Dad anyone could ever ask for. I don’t remember a time without you, and you will not be forgotten. Every shot of patron, every time we listen to Hotel California, every vroom of a Ferrari, you will be right there with us. You fought with dignity and courage, surrounded by all of us with love and respect till the very end. You can rest In peace now, we love you so much.
Zarin told People:
“He is the most loving and caring person I have ever known besides my father. Sometimes life just isn’t fair. But we have such a great love story. He is the love of my life and I will do everything in my power to heal and care for him.”
Bobby is survived by his wife, three children and stepdaughter. A memorial service for Bobby will be held at Riverside Memorial in New York City this Monday.
