In November 2016, a high school teenager named Thomas Brown was spending an evening with some of his friends when he never returned home.

According to KFDA, the Canadian, Texas teen was last seen on November 23, 2016, at around 11:30 p.m. He was 18 when he went missing.

As his mom Penny Meek reported, since that day in November, he hasn’t been heard from.

During an episode of Dateline in 2018, Penny said that she originally grew worried when her son missed his midnight curfew, something he didn’t normally do:

“Thomas never missed curfew. He would even come home well before curfew, and then he and his friends would play video games.”

Brown’s car was discovered hours later after one of his friends went up in her dad’s helicopter to look for it.

It was found, seemingly abandoned, just four miles from his home:

“It was found near where our sewage ponds are, which is not near anywhere he would have gone.”

His phone, backpack, and keys were also missing. His backpack and keys were also later found months after his disappearance and miles away from where his car was located.

Sadly, on January 9, 2019, human remains were found in Hemphill County. Through dental records, investigators and coroners were able to identify that the remains found on Lake Marvin Road belonged to Thomas Brown.

As KFDA reports, the remains were found by an unknown individual who learned that investigators wanted people to keep an eye out while on Lake Marvin Road.

In a press release, the private investigators hired to help find Brown said the individual did “the right thing” by reporting what he had found.

After learning her son’s body had been found after more than two years, Brown’s mom told the media:

“We ask for prayers for our family, Thomas’s friends and our community. We are heartbroken.”

A press release following the recovery of Brown’s body was posted to a Facebook page dedicated to helping find the teen:

The press released reads, in part:

Although the discovery of Tom’s remains gives some closure to the mystery of his location, there are still questions on what really happened on Lake Marvin Road. And now, a new phase will begin in the investigation, and those whom may know something need to come forward now.

A memorial service to celebrate Brown’s life is expected to take place on February 2 at 2:00 p.m. in the gym of his old high school.

The cause of Brown’s death has not been made public. It is also unclear if investigators have any leads as to what may have happened on the night of the teen’s disappearance.
