On Tuesday morning, Rebecca Gayheart, a model and actress married to “Grey’s Anatomy’s” Eric Dayne, shared tragic news. The 46-year-old took to Instagram to reveal her baby sister, Rachel, 38, had suddenly passed away.
According to Rachel’s obituary, she died on Friday, August 11, at the Hazard Appalachian Regional Medical Center in Kentucky.
Radar Online reported that the mother of one had been booked into Perry County jail just before her death on charges that are unclear.
Local police told Radar that in the days leading up to her death, she began suffering from pneumonia. Detective Thomas of Kentucky State Police said:
“She was having difficulty breathing. She became sick five days after she was incarcerated, and then we transmitted her to the hospital … She died about three or four days later.”
Thomas continued, saying that once her symptoms began significantly worsening, she was quickly transferred to the hospital:
“Jail personnel then alerted the hospital, and they said that she was suffering from pneumonia symptoms.”
However, sadly, it was too late.
Radar reported that her medical records have been subpoenaed for a police investigation, so her official cause of death has not yet been determined:
“At this time her exact cause of death is still under investigation.”
It was also reported that the 38-year-old suffered from a longtime struggle with addiction, and has been arrested multiple times on drug-related charges in the past.
Despite Rachel’s tumultuous past, her loved ones were beside themselves.
Rebecca posted a heartfelt message alongside a photo from Rachel’s funeral on Monday:

My baby sister Rachel "ray " has sadly passed away . We buried her on the hilltop in Kentucky along with my grandparents and cousins. She was loved by everyone and had a wicked sense of humor and the most loving heart. Life has not been easy for you sis but now you can be peaceful. ✨Im so grateful that I was able to be with my family during this time and want to say thank you to everyone for all of the love and support you've sent to me and my family. Let this be a reminder that every day is precious and we must live our best life NOW. Let your loved ones know how much you care as there is no guarantee that you will get another day to do so . #RIP #heartbroken? #mypeople #lifeishard #racheldeannegayheart #mifamilia #godbless
