On December 27, Erika Aguilar decided to join friends for 50-cent wings night at a local spot in Clifton, New Jersey. Around 9 p.m., Aguilar was hit by a car while crossing the street.

As NJ.com reports, the driver, described by a witness as a “heavy set” man, got out of a silver car and looked at Aguilar before fleeing the scene. Aguilar was left with “extensive and traumatic injuries.”

The 26-year-old was also four months pregnant. Miraculously, her baby survived.

Aguilar’s mother, Ana Aguilar, said her daughter suffered fractures to her mid-section, right leg, and left hand, and sustained deep cuts to her face, head, and scalp.

Photos posted to a GoFundMe account reveal the extent of the expecting mother’s devastating injuries:

Ana Aguilar told NJ.com the hit-and-run driver left her daughter, who also has an eight-year-old son, lying in the middle of the road. Ana Aguilar pleaded for the person responsible to turn themselves in:

“Just turn yourself in. How do you leave a pregnant woman out on the street and keep going? Have a conscience and own up to what you did.”

Nearly one month following the accident, Aguilar was discharged from a rehabilitation center, reports NJ.com. But Ana Aguilar said her daughter has a long road ahead:

“She has a back brace and she’s going to need a cane and a walker along with a chair for the shower. We have to see how everything heals.”

Aguilar will also need plastic surgery.

According to Aguilar’s mother, the dental assistant injured her dominant hand. However, she maintains hope of being able to return to work. Ana Aguilar described her daughter as “a fighter” on GoFundMe.

Ana Aguilar said her daughter doesn’t talk about the accident much because she “doesn’t remember much” from that night but she does ask her mother questions, as Ana Aguilar revealed to NJ.com:

“She cries. She asks, ‘Why did this happen to me? What did I do to deserve it?'”

Ana Aguilar said she replies:

“I tell her everything is going to be OK.”

As for the survival of her daughter’s baby, Ana Aguilar called it a “miracle.” She said, “The baby is fine. The pregnancy is fine. We had a miracle.”
