A CrossFit trainer’s decision to work out while pregnant is causing controversy after she shared a video of herself lifting heavy weights.

Fitness guru Emily Breeze is currently in her third trimester, but that doesn’t stop her from staying active.

The expectant mom shared a video of herself on Instagram Wednesday that showed her hitting the gym with her growing belly. She wrote:

I’m always baffled when people judge other women for working out while pregnant. Do you really think pregnancy is a time to flip off your health and just stop doing everything that you did in your normal day to day life? It’s a time when your focus really should be on health and wellness which includes sleep, good nutrition, mental clarity and exercise.

I read some comments like “what is wrong with her- why does she workout. Only thing I did during pregnancy is lift cheeseburgers to my mouth.” On top of this comment are others chiming in with support. I’ll never understand why we bash someone for doing what’s healthy and positive. There is so much room for less judgement and just overall support on living healthy. On that note, here are some details of my workout yesterday: ⭐️ 1) lifting complex 5 sets of 5 squats + 2 lunges on each leg- I worked up to 135 lbs ⭐️ 2) 3 rounds of 10 power cleans (85lbs) 10 lawnmower pulls (35lb dumbbell) 200 meter run ⭐️ 3) 10 calories on bike, 30 double under jump ropes, 10 pull-ups ⭐️ 4) 3 rounds of 5 clean and jerks without dropping barbell. #supporthealthyliving #healthiswealth #30weekspregnant #breezethroughfitness

She then went on to detail her workout routine for the day.

Some commenters supported the mom and said that she should ignore her critics. However, others criticized the mom for lifting weights.

One commenter wrote:

Its unsafe for you and the baby to be lifting heavyweights while pregnant!! Can cause pre mature labor , low birthweight and complications with the baby working out is great but do things like the while pregnant is just unsafe

According to Tommy’s, a pregnancy safety organization, heavy weightlifting should be avoided during pregnancy. CrossFit is specifically mentioned as an activity not to do.

The organization says to avoid:

Deadlifts, clean and press, and upright rows, as there is a risk of the bar touching the baby bump – these exercises need control correct technique, correct knee and shoulder alignment – but in pregnancy this is difficult.

Dr. Abdur-Rahman told Aaptiv that weightlifting up to around 30 pounds should be fine for pregnant women in moderation. More than that can be harmful:

“Repetitively lifting excessive amounts of weight diverts important blood flow from the uterus to the active skeletal muscles, which can result in depriving the baby of oxygen and nutrients.”

Pregnant women are recommended to try low-impact workouts like light weightlifting, yoga, and swimming.

Wear a shirt – not everyone wants to see this while pregnant women are weightlifting – good for her to stay in shape but lets be considerate with your attire
