In March, the “Black Moms Blog” Instagram account posted a photo of an infant being prepped to be circumcised.

The photo has since gone viral again and it is causing a heated debate between moms who are for circumcisions and moms who are against it.

❗Trigger Warning❗ Our community is very expressive when it comes to things like piercing a baby’s ear. What are your thoughts on circumcision? Most moms aren’t in the room when it happens. Note: please be respectful in the comment section. ••••••••••••••••••• #RP: @empressgod : You take a freshly born little boy and you strap him down into an apparatus that holds his legs apart. It’s called the Circumstraint. There are Velcro cuffs to keep his arms and legs in place so he can’t move while you’re slicing his genitals. Then, you coat his penis in antiseptic. The topical is as much medication as the baby will have during the process and it does nothing at all to alleviate the pain. You can’t sedate babies or give them anesthetics for this procedure — or most others — so he’s literally going to feel every rip, tear, yank, and slice as he’s strapped down to a device in an operating room. “Now, because it’s meant to shield the baby from foreign materials such as fecal matter, the foreskin’s opening is incredibly tiny. The doctor is going to procure some forceps to place them into the tiny opening and widen it. This rips the baby’s synechia, the bit of skin that’s attached to the head of his penis and the inner lining of his foreskin. This is also where the newborn’s screaming becomes so shrill and heartwrenching, where he screams until his lungs have nothing more to offer so his mouth becomes stuck in a silent, breathless, crimson-faced gape of anguish. What we’re doing to our newborn boys is nothing short of barbaric. “But we’ve only just begun. “As the blood begins to form around the tip of his penis, a clamp is attached to his newly stretched skin. Then, a slit is cut into the dorsal side of the tender flesh. The skin is peeled back, revealing the raw and bloody glans (head) of the baby’s penis. Once that’s exposed, a tiny bell-shaped cap is placed on the glans, and the foreskin is stretched over that bell. A string goes around the object to secure the skin, the tighter the better, for it will ooze blood and obscure the view of what needs to be sliced off. The status, which was written by another Instagram account, gives a fairly graphic description of what takes place during circumcisions:

Many moms weighed in on how they feel about the whole process.

Some are against circumcisions:

My husband was not circumcised and we would not circumcise our child if we had a boy. Honestly most of the men I know who are circumcised have issues with losing too much of their foreskin leading to cracks in their skin from it pulling too tight when they are aroused. Also most of my nephew’s are circumcised and they all look like hatchet jobs. And all done by different doctor’s at different hospitals on top of that! The original reason for this was cleanliness but I think since it’s soooo many year’s after this practice began with soooo many inventions to help cleanliness, like indoor plumbing, this practice needs to be done away with just like the female circumcisions in Africa. Teach them how to properly clean their penis and they will be fine. And they look a lot nicer with the foreskin in my opinion.

What about what your child would want. If god wanted anything cut of he wouldn’t have made a little boy have foreskin in the first place. It seems like it’s all about u. God help your child and him being able to make decisions in life.

Mutilating newborn should be forbidden and penalized by law!

I didn’t know any better because I had my boys when I was young and uninformed. I never would have done it if the hospital had provided information on circumcisions. It’s crazy because they give you so much info on breastfeeding but not this.

Regardless of whether or not this description is accurate, you should do your research before cutting your sons. No medical organizations in the entire world recommend routine infant circumcision. There are no benefits to circumcision, and if you do your research you will find that any studies proving “benefits” have been proven flawed and incorrect. And aside from a medical perspective, it boils down to bodily autonomy. It’s not my penis, it is not my choice to permanently alter it. My husband was cut as a baby and wishes more than anything that he didn’t have that choice taken away from him. He wishes he had his foreskin. And remember that while they are your baby now, someday he will grow into an adult and form his own beliefs and preferences. What if those are different from yours? Just some food for thought!

While others believe circumcisions are necessary:

The doctor I worked over 36 years ago performed this on my son & I assisted as well & my spouse had one at 33 yrs of age & I assisted with it as well…

I’ve seen several circumcisions performed and it isn’t as heart wrenching and grueling as this caption makes it seems. I’ve seen babies go through the whole process, let out a single cry and go right back to sleep. Every one will do as they please when it comes to their child, but you know what’s horrible? Being 60, 70 or 80 years old and having to get a circumcision because the foreskin has stiffened and hardened and will no longer retract, no longer allowing the head of the penis to be exposed, possibly leading to infection. It’s called phimosis.

I am sooooo for it…..if God ordained it in His word….it’s all good…plus the PENIS looks nicer.

I’m circumcising my son just because I don’t wanna see that nasty foreskin hanging over the head of the penis. Also I do believe in the ways of the Bible.

A 2014 CBS News article reported that according to a Mayo Clinic study, circumcisions are on the decline in the United States, down from 83 percent in the 1960s to 77 percent in 2010. The study found that half of uncircumcised males will, at some point in their lifetime, contract a medical condition that has to do with their foreskin. Many advocates of circumcision believe it is “unethical” to not circumcise a child, akin to not vaccinating.

Some opponents of circumcisions, on the other hand, believe that circumcising a child is a human rights violation.
