A construction worker passing by a Los Angeles, California, elementary school caught a glimpse of something he probably wasn’t expecting to see— a naked man playing with the kids.

According to CBSLA, the worker watched in disbelief as the man chased after students on the playground at Carthay Center Elementary School; he managed to capture on video the moment he put his pants back on.

That wasn’t the only surprise, though: it turned out that the naked man wasn’t a stranger to the kids. He was their physical education teacher.

CBSLA reports that the unnamed teacher’s actions terrified the second- and fifth-grade students.

One parent described to CBSLA how the children ran for cover:

“He was supposed to be helping them learn P.E., run around and have fun. But he undressed and started chasing the kids while he was naked, and then the kids ducked and dodged, ran into some of the classrooms and got safe haven that way.”

School district officials told CBSLA the nude man works for the district’s Star Education Program and was under contract as an employee.

The school was placed on a lock-down to keep the children safe while the gym teacher was taken into custody.

Parents were alerted with a robocall and a letter sent home from the school to notify them about the naked teacher. The letter read, in part:

An individual began behaving in an unusual way, prompting us to contact law enforcement. As a safety precaution, our school went on a brief lockdown while officers responded and took the individual into custody.

An outraged parent who spoke to CBSLA worried that the man could have hurt the kids. He added:

“All of the kids saw his private parts. Very embarrassing, very upset.”

Mental health counselors were brought in to help the children following the bizarre outburst, and school police continue to investigate exactly what happened.
