Former Olympic gold medal gymnast Shawn Johnson East was first introduced to now-husband and NFL free agent Andrew East in 2012, when she was representing the U.S. gymnastics team in the London Olympics and supporting friend and cyclist, Taylor Phinney, according to The Tennessean.

Phinney’s teammate, Guy East, was Andrew’s brother. Guy reportedly knew right after meeting Shawn that she was the girl for his brother, who was playing football for Vanderbilt University at the time.

Shawn and Andrew’s first real date didn’t happen until almost a year later, in June of 2013, when Shawn made a trip to Tennessee. As the Tennessean reports:

Their first official date began tailgating and watching a Vanderbilt baseball game from the top of a parking garage with a bunch of East’s football buddies.

Then they drove through the city, stopping at the Parthenon, checking out Broadway and eating at Loveless Cafe. By the end of the adventure, Johnson was smitten — with Andrew and the city.

Shawn fell head over heels for Andrew.

He proposed two years later, in July of 2015, seconds after Shawn threw out the first pitch at a Chicago Cubs game:

The pair wed on April 16, 2016.

Over the weekend, on October 21, Shawn and Andrew announced that they had been expecting, but that their joy quickly came to an end after 25-year-old Shawn suffered a miscarriage.

In a 20-minute-long YouTube video, an emotional Shawn started out by explaining how she felt about being pregnant:

“So, I’m pregnant. We are going to have a baby. I definitely wasn’t planning this, but it’s really, really exciting. How am I going to tell Andrew. He’s going to be a daddy.”

Shawn went on to explain that she was confused, straight-up terrified, overwhelmed, and tired because she and Andrew had agreed to wait a few years before welcoming kids into the world.

And while they both knew getting pregnant was a possibility, they were actively not trying. This made the handful of positive pregnancy tests that much more emotional for Shawn, who was alone on a business trip when she learned she was pregnant:

“I feel lonely, I want my husband here, I want to tell him. I just feel like, ‘What the crap is happening?’ Like I’m gonna be a mom. I have a human growing inside of me.”

The 25-year-old then became concerned with how her husband would take the news, as it was he who was most adamant about waiting for a few years to have a child.

Andrew admitted in the video that he had planned to reach a few more life goals before becoming a father, but that didn’t matter:

“To my future kid, if you are on the way, I love you. I have no idea who you are, what you are, or what you’ll be like, But I’m pumped to meet you, seriously. You mom is a phenomenal person and I’m excited for you to grow up and really appreciate how cool she is. I’m not that cool, but I’m going to be the best dad I can [be].”

Shawn broke the news to Andrew by handing him an infant-size pair of Converse sneakers — his favorite type of shoe:

Shortly after she told Andrew the news, Shawn began experiencing stomach pains and bleeding. She and Andrew visited a local Los Angeles doctor, who confirmed their worst fear — they had lost the baby.

Shawn and Andrew decided to be open about their story because they know they aren’t the only ones who have gone through a miscarriage, and they, unfortunately, won’t be the last.

In the video (which you can watch below), Andrew commented on how strong his wife is, and how proud he is of her for sharing something so personal.
