John Drennan had just proposed to his girlfriend, Daniella, over the weekend in New York City, and she said yes.

Drennan was reportedly “so excited,” but Daniella then accidentally lost her ring when it slipped off her finger and fell down a sewer grate in Times Square, reports Fox 8.

Shattered, Drennan told the New York Times:

“I was devastated. I was literally crying. It was the worst moment of my life.”

In a viral video circulating Twitter, the New York Police Department released a clip of Drennan walking away after failing to retrieve the ring. NYPD lightheartedly claimed that he was “wanted” for dropping his fiancée’s ring down a subway grate.

The tweet quickly made headlines, as followers made jokes and had lots to say about Drennan’s choice of proposal locations:

As it turned out, Drennan actually proposed to Daniella in Central Park, and she lost her engagement ring in Times Square. Luckily for the couple, the NYPD saved the day by recovering the expensive item.

The officer who spotted the jewel told the Associated Press:

“Fortunately, it was actually kind of sitting on top of all of that stuff, so it really wasn’t hard to find. It was just a small object like that in the midst of all the garbage.”

After Det. Joseph Bucchignano managed to retrieve Daniella’s engagement ring, news soon reached the pair, who had returned to the U.K.

The newly engaged couple profusely thanked the department for cleaning and returning the precious item.
