Nicole Kidman is an Oscar-winning actress with plenty of serious film roles under her belt, but it was one recent television role that left her feeling “physically and emotionally drained.”
Kidman recently portrayed a battered wife on the hit HBO series, “Big Little Lies.” Her character, Celeste, was often beaten by her husband, portrayed by Alexander Skarsgård.Screenshot/Facebook
“I didn’t realize how much of it penetrated me. I would go home at night sometimes and be in a lot of pain, and I had to take things like Advil because I was being thrown around physically. I was really bruised.”
Her character’s abuse also took a mental toll on the actress. Kidman told Entertainment Tonight:
“Because we were shooting for so long, I think the duration of [the production] slowly started to seep in. Normally, I can step back into my family life in a very easy way.
Not always, but you know, usually. I’ve been working a long time now. But it was hard.”
But there was one person who helped her make it through the difficult filming process: her husband.Jason Merritt/Getty Images
Kidman has been married to country star Keith Urban for 11 years, and their relationship is still one of her biggest support systems, according to People.
She recently told ET that his support helped heal her after those difficult days on set:
“I came home to loving arms, someone who would hold me, and I was really upset at times. Really damaged, really upset, and physically and emotionally drained and in pain — my neck, particularly.”
The actress said that the fact Urban is also an artist helped him better understand what she was going through. She told ET:
“Luckily, I have a partner who is artistic so he understands what it takes to support that.”
But it seems like all the hard work is paying off. “Big Little Lies” was nominated for a number of Emmys earlier this month, including outstanding lead actress for Kidman’s portrayal of Celeste.
And Urban’s unwavering support for his hardworking wife is partly to thank.
