A black news anchor admitted to straightening her hair most of her life to hide her insecurities.
For 14 years, Melanie Lawson had always worn wigs before going on air but one day, she felt compelled to make a change.
Lawson decided it was time to get rid of her former first lady “Michelle Obama” wig and do her hair in a different way, reports Yahoo.
After years of wearing conventional hairstyles and taking lots of time straightening her hair every day for acceptance, Lawson decided to toss out her wig and wear her hair on her own terms.
The mom said she also wanted to be an example for her daughter, so when the little girl told her mom, “I want straight hair like you,” Lawson decided to retire the “Michelle” look.
In a personal essay published by her employer News4Jax, Lawson opened up about her experience growing up with viewers. She said:
“[I] accepted that my unacceptable hair was going to be the butt of jokes, the ugly elephant in the room, something that always needed heat or a chemical to make OK.
The mother-of-two told the outlet she didn’t want to teach her 4-year-old to hide her natural look.
The TV reporter referred to herself as the “fake hair girl” and said “my friends hated my wig” although viewers embraced her straight hair.
She explained that as a black newscaster straight hair was the industry standard, and she followed convention until her little girl shed light on the issue.
“Recently, I picked her up from school and I happened to be wearing my wig. She started yelling, ‘Mommy, take off your wig!’ and everyone stared. It was embarrassing.”
Lawson said her daughter loves her new look and they both have “free hair” now.
As for her “Michelle” wig, it’s in Lawson’s closet for now.
She thought about burning it but didn’t want to start a fire.
