West Virginia mom Stacey Bright tragically lost her 10-year-old son Colby in 2016 when he was shot in the head during an “accidental firearm discharge.”
But she always kept his memory close by with a cross-shaped urn that contained his ashes, WBOY reports.

Bright said that thieves broke into her car and stole the valuables inside when she parked on a busy street in Clarksburg.
The thieves left a second urn inside the car untouched, but the mother said she is heartbroken over the loss of her son’s ashes. She told WBOY:
“I had two urns hanging from my rearview mirror. One of the urns was in my seat, and the other one was nowhere to be found in my car. My son was moving seats everywhere, and he said ‘Mom, why did they take Colby’s urn?'”
Though she said their family has made great strides in the past year to move forward after Colby’s passing, the loss of his ashes has been a difficult blow, the mother said:
“It made me feel like I lost him all over again. I mean I’ve got stuff. I got pictures, but I would not in a million years wish this on any parent.”
Following the break-in, Bright decided to try and reach out to the thieves directly by posting on social media.
The mother wrote on Facebook:
JUST WANT TO GIVE A SHOUT OUT TO WHOEVER THE ONE WAS THAT BROKE INTO MY CAR SATURDAY NIGHT… JUST THOUGHT YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT CROSS NECKLACE YOU TOOK, WAS NOT JUST A NECKLACE… IT IS MY 10 YEAR OLD SON’S ASHES… WOULD APPRECIATE IT IF YOU WOULD RETURN IT.
** Please share, & help me get it back**
The plea has since been shared more than 7,000 times on the platform, and many commenters offered up their words of support.
But so far, there’s been no word from those who committed the robbery. It’s unclear if local police are investigating the incident.
