Actress Rachel McAdams and her boyfriend, Jamie Linden, welcomed a bouncing baby boy in April. Now, she’s earning applause for putting her natural mommy duties on show at a recent photo shoot.

The 40-year-old told The Sunday Times in November that she’s loving life as a mom. McAdams said:

“It’s the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me, hands down. [People say] your life is not your own anymore, but I had 39 years of me, I was sick of me, I was so happy to put the focus on some other person.”

But having a baby hasn’t stopped the actress from carrying on with work, photographer Claire Rothstein explained on Instagram.

Two months ago, Rothstein photographed McAdams for “Girls Girls Girls” magazine. At the time, the actress’ baby boy was still breastfeeding.

That’s when McAdams allowed the photographer to incorporate her pumping into one of the shots — complete with Versace and Bulgari diamonds no less.

A million reasons why I wanted to post this picture. Obviously #rachelmcadams looks incredible and was quite literally the dream to work with but also this shoot was about 6 months post her giving birth to her son, so between shots she was expressing/pumping as still breastfeeding. We had a mutual appreciation disagreement about whose idea it was to take this picture but I’m still sure it was hers which makes me love her even more. Breastfeeding is the most normal thing in the world and I can’t for the life of me imagine why or how it is ever frowned upon or scared of. I don’t even think it needs explaining but just wanted to put this out there, as if it even changes one person’s perception of something so natural, so normal, so amazing then that’s great. Besides she’s wearing Versace and @bulgariofficial diamonds and is just fucking major. Big shout out to all the girls ?? #rachelmcadams for @girls.girls.girls.magazine .com cover shoot ? @clairerothstein #pleaseshare . . . Side note: I did not look anywhere near as fabulous as this when feeding/pumping. And that’s ok too. . . . Stylist: @alicialombardini ? #girlsgirlsgirlsmag #girlsgirlsgirls #bringingbackthewoman #nogrungejustglamour #independentmagazine #printisnotdead #normalisebreastfeeding #normalizebreastfeeding #breastfeeding #life #women #versace #bulgari

Rothstein said she loved the photo because she hoped it would help normalize breastfeeding.

Though she admitted that she didn’t look “anywhere near as fabulous” when she was pumping herself, the photographer continued:

Some social media users slammed McAdams for seeking “attention” with the breast pumping shoot. But others, mostly mothers themselves, loved the photo.

One Facebook user wrote:

That’s exactly how I look when I’m pumping at work! Not really but appreciating how celebs are showing that nursing and pumping is very normal and should not be seen a taboo in public.

Many others made references to McAdams’ starring role in the cult classic, “Mean Girls.” A commenter joked:

I saw Regina George wearing Versace and a breast pump, so I’m wearing Versace and a breast pump.

Regardless of the reaction, many agree it certainly took courage on McAdams’ part to openly share the photo.

You go, girl! The more people publicize the advantages of breastfeeding, the better. The best part is you’re demonstrating that anyone can do it.
