A woman who thought she had miscarried in a Burger King bathroom but instead gave birth while overdosing on heroin, recently opened up about the moment that nearly took her son’s life.
Elizabeth Sanders, now in recovery and 122 days drug-free, described the day she says she hit rock bottom.
Sanders told WSYX that she was snorting Xanax and heroin with her boyfriend on August 3 when police found the expecting mother sitting on the toilet with blood covering the stall, reports the Miami Herald.
The 26-year-old was eight months pregnant at the time.
According to police in Chillicothe, Ohio, Sanders was so high she wasn’t even aware that her son was alive after she had given birth. Authorities found the newborn face down in toilet water. He was still breathing.
But Sanders says she can barely recall the day her child was born.
“I kind of remember that I had an urge to go to the bathroom and then that was it.”
The mother of two other children, a girl, 8, and boy, 5, said:
“It was the Xanax and heroin I was taking, just snorting them both together and that’s the big effect of the Xanax, you don’t remember.
I remember being at the hospital and not being pregnant anymore and not knowing what happened; that’s what’s really scary.”
Medics rushed the baby boy to the hospital. Sanders was arrested on unrelated charges.
Her boyfriend Zachary Frey, 26, who was passed out in a vehicle, was arrested on drug-related charges, reports the Chillicothe Gazette.
Three days after her arrest, Sanders received drug addiction treatment. The mother-of-three said she’s been abusing drugs for six years, but now she’s sober and trying to kick her old addiction habits for the sake of her children.
The 26-year-old needs to stay clean in order to regain custody of the “miracle” baby who was born in the bathroom stall.
“Giving Elias the opportunity to have a sober mom, his whole life. I haven’t ever been able to do that.
If I don’t keep my recovery first I’m not going to have my kids anyway. You have to make that your top priority.”
“I hate that it happened, I hate how everything happened.
But, I truly don’t know if it wouldn’t have happened (if) I would be clean or alive right now.”
Sanders’ son, Elias, was born “perfectly” healthy and hasn’t had any medical issues.
The recovering mom said that “nobody should feel like there’s no way to bounce back.”
Every day she’s working on turning her life around.
