On August 21, Iowa mother Alicia Marie Rios called the police and said that her 5-week-old daughter, Lydia, was having difficulty breathing.
The mother was “hysterically” crying when police arrived, according to the Des Moines Register. Her baby was laying on the ground.
Rios claimed that the infant was sitting in a car seat sleeping, when her 2-year-old child dropped a toy on her head, causing an injury.
Deputies at the scene noted a plastic caterpillar toy sitting nearby, the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports.
The infant was hospitalized and put on life support. She had suffered skull fractures and brain bleeds that left her in a coma.
Hospital staff told authorities that the severe injuries were not consistent with Rios’ story.
The 5-week-old died on August 25, after she was taken off of life support. An autopsy confirmed that Lydia died from “abusive blunt force trauma to the head.”
When questioned about the inconsistencies, the mother confessed that she “threw Lydia down, striking her head on a coffee table in the living room of their home.”
On Friday, Rios was charged with first-degree murder and child endangerment causing death. She is currently being held in Fayette County Jail and has not entered a plea.
If convicted, Rios faces a mandatory life sentence without possibility of parole.
