When Ohio mom Alyssa Edwards headed off to work on a horse farm near her Hayesville home on Saturday, she hadn’t found someone to watch her two young children.
According to the Ashland Times-Gazette, Edwards left her 8-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter alone, while her husband was also away at work.
But around 10 a.m., the mother got a emergency call from her eldest child.
According to police, the 8-year-old called his mother after he had shot his little sister with the family’s .22 caliber rifle multiple times.
The mother returned home to find her daughter bleeding, but did not contact emergency services.
Instead, she dressed her 4-year-old’s gunshot wounds and changed the bloody bedspread, before returning back to work on the nearby horse farm, People reports, leaving the children alone for a second time.
Ashland County Prosecutor Christopher Tunnell told the Ashland Times-Gazette:
“She came home, cleaned up a bed cover with blood on it, examined the 4-year-old and was aware the 4-year-old was injured at the time. And despite that knowledge, clocked back in at work at 11 a.m., again leaving the 8-year-old and the 4-year-old home alone, yet again.”
She didn’t take the girl to get medical attention until later in the day, when “urine” started leaking from the wound.
The 4-year-old was treated for multiple gunshot wounds at a local hospital, where local police were contacted. Edwards was arrested and is facing two charges of child endangering, Fox 8 reports.Ashland County Sheriff’s Office
The family’s gun was kept in a safe with their other firearms, but the 8-year-old knew how to access it and work the weapon.
He also knew the separate location where the ammunition was stored loaded the gun himself after retrieving it.
The 4-year-old is currently recovering at the Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland and is in stable condition. Chief Deputy Carl Richert told Fox 8:
“God was with her that day. Thank God she will be okay.”
Her brother is in the custody of children’s services, but likely won’t be charged in the shooting.
Edwards is currently being held on $30,000 bond.
