Tennessee mom Melissa Thaxton has relied on food stamps to feed her family since sustaining a back injury in 2015 that left her unable to work.

So when she didn’t receive any food stamps from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) during the government shutdown, she decided to speak to local news station WKRN.

She was concerned about being unable to feed her 7-year-old and knew other families may have had the same problem. Thaxton said:

“Very concerned with the shutdown that the people that do have to wait won’t get their benefits and I have a kid to feed and I’m very worried you know that we will not get them.”

The mom hoped speaking out could create some change. Instead, Thaxton said that she’s just getting slammed by online bullies.

She said social media users have left cruel comments implying that she doesn’t need food stamps because she’s not “missing meals.”

Thaxton read aloud one comment to WKRN, she said it read:

“’If she would back away from the table, there would be plenty for her kids to eat.'”

The mom said commenters had no sympathy for her situation, even though she’s trying to feed her 7-year-old.

She’s noted that’s she’s struggled with weight her whole life. Thaxton said:

“I don’t think some people even read the article, they just read the caption and they just started going off.”

Social media users also criticized her tattoos and piercings, though Thaxton said hasn’t spent money on them in a long time.

The mom said adult bullying could be a negative influence on children, and she believes it needs to stop. Thaxton noted:

“Say no to adult bullying. How can you expect your kids not to bully when you are doing the same thing?”

Her boyfriend has started a Facebook page to raise awareness about adult bullying, WKRN reports.

Thaxton said the experience was “horrendous.”

You have to eat an enormous amount of food to be that overweight – so maybe that is the problem?

    • Anonymous 11 months ago

Its not how much you eat. Its what you eat

      • Anonymous 11 months ago

        It’s probably both!

      • Anonymous 11 months ago

Agree to a certain point tho

No not really. I have hypothyroidism. I have to watch everything I eat and often restrict myself from foods. I am overweight and it takes all my will power to just not gain. There are medical conditions. Some people do over eat but I would be willing to bet there are mental conditions they suffer from.

      • dred 11 months ago

Yes, really. Hypothyroidism doesn’t cause this degree of obesity without causing all sorts of other problems, like myxedema seizures and coma. Plus, there’s a pretty simple cure for hypothyroidism: levothyroxine (Synthroid).
If a person’s “metabolism” is the problem, the solution is to increase the metabolism with weight-bearing exercise or at least mobility.

        • Anonymous 10 months ago

Did you read she has a back injury

        • Gal 10 months ago

It can when you don’t know you have it. I had a friend who was a size 8! She ALWAYS been skinny I didn’t see her for a year or so and I was so shocked she went up like 4 dress sizes. It was me that suggested she mention it to her doctor, and she has quite bad PCOS.
Sooooooo many gain weight or can’t loose weight even though they have tried. Then later find out they have it. Same with PCOS and other conditions. Just shows how arrogant you are.

      • Janet 10 months ago

Sweetie I’m sorry about people and their reactions. I’m overweight too and I understand. You keep a positive spirit because you are as God made you. I love you.

      • Anonymous 10 months ago

There is absolutely no reason that I can think of not to get you to have the treatment you need, not to be hypothyroid. Very easy to adjust your Synthroid dose.

    • Anonymous 10 months ago

I suggest a trip back to primary school if you actually think that overweight people must eat “an enormous amount of food” to carry on being overweight. What a child-like analysis.

    • Lori Risk 10 months ago

Not true. I weighed over 400 lbs before I was diagnosed with PCOS. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is where my body overproduced insulin and stored food as fat. Once I started on Metformin, my weight dropped. So, before you judge people, show some compassion. She also has a back problem, as do I, which makes it difficult to walk long distances, swim, running is impossible, as is Zumba, etc. there are only certain PT exercises that I can do. Am I huge now? No. Am I rain thin? No. Am I comfortable in my own body now? Yes. that’s what matters. Shame on you for assuming!

      • Gal 10 months ago

Same thing happened with my friend. She was a size 8. Skinny little thing. I didn’t see her for a while, I remember saying to my partner how shocked I was. It was all around her waist, stomach and bum. Anyway… She was saying like she doesn’t know what’s going on etc. Anyway… I mentioned this, because I have it too, but I’ve always been big, but packed it on after having my son, and started getting hairy. It was weeks before I found out that I mentioned it to her. Turns out she has quite bad PCOS with insulin resistance etc etc she’s gained like 6 stone, and I’ve gained 7 since having my son. It’s a horrible condition.

  • Cara 11 months ago

Weight gain is from consuming more calories than you burn. She is disabled due to a back injury. That means she may not be able to handle much physical activity. Also healthy food is more expensive than food that is higher in calories. Not to mention she states that she’s always struggled with her weight, we don’t even know if she might have been just as big or bigger when she first started needing help with feeding her family.
Never judge people. You reap what you sow.

    • Matthew K Davila 11 months ago

if she cant exercise then she must eat less than normal. As for the high cost of healthy food i was at my healthiest and skinniest when most of my food came from when the vast bulk of my diet came from my backyard garden, uber cheap. I planted perenials, which saves the work of planting anew every year.

      • Millie 10 months ago

With a back injury how do you expect her to work in a garden?

        • Betty A 10 months ago

Well with a bad back she could not build one of those that are raised off the ground but but it is possible.

          • nancy 10 months ago

I do that , and I have a really bad back , with 5 failed back surgeries ,I went into surgery full of hope in my high heels I came out in a wheel chair and now after years my left leg is paralized ,so now I have to wear a brace to walk but I do have raised beds to garden , along with pots ,I also do yoga and weight training . Some people have motivation , I feel sorry for the kid , what an example.

      • Gal 10 months ago

You don’t though. So many people don’t even think to. Most people just go about their lives as usual, esp if she’s a busy mum with kids, stuck in the same routine, people eat how they always do. It’s so easy to say well.. eat less then, but in reality you don’t. When I was loosing weight which is hard because I have problems with my back, legs, hips etc and I have PCOS and maybe now some other condition, ( that makes you gain weight) yay!!! ? Anyway… When I was loosing. I was buying more and eating more. Instead of a shop lasting over a month it was last two weeks, sometimes less, and having to buy leaner means etc and healthy alternatives is alot more expensive.

      • Jennifer Smith 10 months ago

You also need to eat a certain minimum level of calories a day just to run your body at even a resting rate, less than that, and your body goes into a stravation mode, and starts storing everything it can to make it through the apparent famine. Eating less food, can work, but only up to a point. You actually need to eat smarter, not just eat less, because eating too little can be sabotaging to a weight loss plan, especially if you just eat fewer calories, without making sure that the calories you eat provide the proper nutrition, and will keep you feeling full. So many overweight people in this country are also suffering from malnutrition, because they aren’t getting the nutrition they need in the food they can afford.

She says she’s always had issues with her weight, which could mean undiagnosed hormonal issues. She suffered a back injury nearly 4 years ago, which will also cause people to pack on weight. And with not being able to work, and haven’t limited resources with which to purchase healthy food, she’s probably been feeding herself and her child food that will keep them going, but isn’t necessarily the most healthy (but, you will have energy, and you will feel full on less).

And even though she has a child does not mean she can’t suffer from PCOS, that makes it difficult to have kids, but you still can.

And bullying someone about their weight, and engaging in other bullying behaviors is counterproductive if you’re going to claim to care about their health. Depression can also cause weight gain, and all bullying does is shame people, which brings on depression. Find out someone’s story, help where you can without being judgemental, maybe drive them to the gym, help them go to a food bank that gives fresh food, take them some healthy food (after finding out whether they have allergies), and be supportive, not shaming, you don’t know their story, although you think you do.

  • Anonymous 11 months ago

When you don’t have much money you buy the cheapest food you can find which is usually the most unhealthy processed food. It’s expensive to eat healthy.

    • nancy 10 months ago

How much is a head of lettuce veggies and a chicken you cook and shred yourself or tuna etc. That makes a great salad and how about some tomatoes for a home cooked soup .

  • nancy 11 months ago

I have no sympathy for someone that eats the amounts she does , is like feeding a small Country , I am disabled having had an accident at work and after 5 failed back surgeries , I am very limited as to what I can do , however I do yoga and strenght training , the formula to stretch your dollars is to eat less amounts of nutritious foods , but I can bet she eats junk food all day long while watching tv all day she should be banned of food stamps and figure a way to feed only the child , she must be in a lot of pain not only for the injury but all that extra weight . Shame on her for putting the financial burden on us taxpayers,

      • Anonymous 10 months ago

    • Anonymous 10 months ago

Do you know how much more expensive healthy food is than food that is terrible for you?

Must be strange having been through the trauma you claim you have and still be such a fuckin wench.

      • Anonymous 10 months ago

Eating healthy is not that expensive. Look at the ads, but what’s on sale and not in a box. As far as having a bad back and not being able to work. I saw a man with one arm sweeping and mopping at Walmart. If you don’t want to be judged don’t post shit on social media and the news asking for it. Go to the place that gives you the food stamps place and make a stink about it. I know I sound like an asshole but damn, a bag of carrots is 79 cents. I’m on a budget myself and only buy whatvis in season or on sale and meal plan. You can easily stretch your budget if you meal plan!

        • nancy 10 months ago

You are so right , this woman is a parasite. I am also on a budget and we eat healthy ,no boxes and very few cans like tomato sauce .

    • Lori Risk 10 months ago

Nancy, how do you know how much she eats? I can tell you that the amount of food stamps she gets for her son and herself is about $225.00, according to the standards. First of all, junk food doesn’t happen on food stamps. You have to buy foods that you make yourself. You can’t use it for anything hot, or prepared, except for frozen foods. It doesn’t indicate that she gets disability, either. Shame on YOU. YOU are part of the problem.

MANY poverty people are over weight….why…because the cheapest thing for them to eat is carbs….pasta is $.88 a box. One can actually eat that for several meals. Mac ‘n Cheese you can get for $.44 a box.
Don’t assume they are eating steak and bonbons! As far as piercings and tats they were probably acquired when young and foolish and before kids!

  • dred 11 months ago

People who get this morbidly obese (BMI greater than 40, super-morbidly obese is BMI > 50) are essentially carb addicts. Their muscles (the only place fat metabolism occurs) are geared toward using sugars as fuel, and nothing else. They get hungry every few hours, and eat more carbs than they need, because while the food is still in their stomachs the insulin gets into their blood and lowers the blood sugar level, and they get a craving. These extra carbs get stored as fat, which obese people are very good at doing. Eventually these people develop insulin tolerance, and become Type II diabetics. Telling a very obese person to simply stop eating and live off their fat is like telling someone adrift at sea to merely drink the seawater. It’s everywhere, it’s water, but it’s useless. The way out: either teach your muscles to burn fat, especially the large, weight-bearing muscles, or fake carb starvation a la Atkins or Keto, or simply starve.
How do you teach the muscles to burn fat? Do aerobic exercise for longer than 20 minutes a few times a week. The exercise will deplete the body’s glycogen (stored sugar), and force the mitochondria within the muscles to induce beta oxidative metabolism. That’s a fancy way of saying taking the long fatty acid chains (long chains of carbon groups) and cutting off two carbons at a time (alpha, beta) and putting them through the Krebs Cycle to make ATP just like sugars (pyruvate).
Once the body can use the fat as fuel, the cravings and constant eating go away, metabolism is maintained, and weight loss occurs. It ain’t easy (carb withdrawal sucks) but it is sure easier than undergoing dangerous surgery and suffering numerous complications later on.

You should not take offense to what they say I believe we as woman are beautiful no matter what size we are. Weight does not define a person’s personality and a lot of people are ignorant to say such stuff.i struggle with weight problems also and I look at it as if a person doesn’t like the way I look then don’t look at me.so just take care of your family and don’t listen to ignorant people.

her back problems are caused by her weight. lose some weight and get a job. don’t expect us working people to support your lazy fat butt. I wouldn’t deprive your son from eating. but you on the other hand yes.

    • Anonymous 10 months ago

Sharon read the article she sustained a back injury while working which caused her to be disabled. Everyone commenting on her weight and life should just shut it. You don’t know her eating habits, her lifestyle, or anything about her. She is disabled and has every right to need help feeding her son. Oh and just an FYI more than half of SNAP recipients are tax payers. Pull your heads out of the clouds and educate yourselves.

I totally agree with you , the human body is not made to carry 10 times the weight she is doing ,
so of course she is going to be in pain and we the taxpayers have to pay the bill for her bad decisions , I feel sorry for the son because he is the one that is being deprived , I don’t see her cooking nutritious healthy meals for him. Ever notice how many people claim back injury / pain as either a reason to be overweight or a reason to be on pain pills forever? I’ve injured my back twice and have herniated disks. However each were treated with short term steroids and physical therapy and I have no pain today. There is some statistic that says genetics only account for less than 1% of obesity yet a far larger number of people claim they are genetically predisposed. I am overweight right now and you know why??? I eat too much!!!!

    • Betty A 10 months ago

Well, lucky you! My late husband had herniated disks and back surgery. He never got rid of the pain and work in spite of it altho later he finally had to give in. But he built a huge barn with the help of our kids and remodled a shop into a great cabin before he gave in to taking the meds.

      • nancy 10 months ago

Sorry to hear about your husband , I wish someone would have told him about gentle hata yoga , in case you know someone in that situation , share it ,is life changing .Again I truly am sorry about your husband , he sounds like a really amazing man.

I think that bullying this woman is unfeeling and just cruel. If all the people (in her area) would be so kind as to help her and anyone else that is in need, it would be a much better world. People can help by donating canned food and non perishables. I don’t live in the area but I know where I live (in Texas) there are many community services that help with food and necessary clothing. People should not have to depend on “the government” for basic necessities like food and clothing. With that in mind, I also believe that SNAP, WIC and ETB need to revise what they allow to be bought on their programs. Get rid of sodas and candy and add things like T-paper and soap. JMHO

Some of you folks are just nasty nasty ugly people. Your taxes? Try looking up where your taxes actually go you succubus hags. Sure as fuck isn’t a large percentage going to welfare. It’s about 6%. Idiots.

    • Jennifer Smith 10 months ago

And it would be nice if more of the huge percentage that goes to military spending actually went to the soldiers, so that they wouldn’t have to go on assistance to feed their families as well. Pentagon loses track of trillions of our tax dollars, and people lose their minds over the much smaller portion that goes to help those in need, including some of our soldiers that protect our freedoms.

  • Anonymous 10 months ago

what does her weight have to do with anything? If she is like many, many other people she probably was overweight since she was little and had struggled all her life. You ignorant bullies are only choosing to see the way she is now and just assume she is this way because she eats alot. I am overweight and have always been. If I went down to get food stamps I suppose I will be have nasty comments made. The fact is there is alot that plays into being overweight. Heredity, what you eat, can not exercise because your knees are bone on bone. People making nasty comments and giving us disgusting stares are some of the

reason why some heavy people do not go to gyms or to the doctors to get help. Both my knees are bone on bone and I need Knee replacements but will not go the doctors because I have been made fun of by one doctor. Give the lady a break and stop being so self righteous. Do you not know how to be compassionate and sympathetic, this is a person, give her some respect. There are alot of haters out there. Think before you speak. What if you had a loved one that was overweight, does she or he not have the right to feed their kids? Grow up people and have some class

  • Anonymous 10 months ago

keep your opinions to yourself. Has your Mom never taught you that if you have nothing nice to say than keep your mouth shut? In my experience it is skinny people who are nasty, I have never heard a heavy person make fun of skinny people, and before you people say I am picking on some skinny people, I am not, just stating a fact, I know there are alot of skinny people who have enough class not to do t

his.Do you really thing you should treat a person like this? Would you want to be treated like this? No you would not. Can people not help anyone anymore because it is the right thing to do?If I knew this lady I would be the first to help out, I do not care what she looks like,it does not matter to me in the least, that is the compassionate and right thing to do.

  • Anonymous 10 months ago

This is what is wrong with society, people making fun of people, not treating one another with dignity and respect. This hurts me to no end, You know you would not want to be hated on, what if your kid was overweight and he or she came home from school crying everyday, did not have no friends because they were overweight, they might be bulllied so much that they kill themselves, is this okay with you? Think about it

  • Anonymous 10 months ago

Wow can’t believe what most people have written… No one has the right to judge anyone! This poor women was talking about her concerns during the shut down. I’ve always wondered why people feel the need to hurt someone’s feelings, the only thing I can think of is how badly they must have been hurt along the way to growing up.. I hope all turns out well for this woman and her child ??

  • Jessica 10 months ago

People are so incredibly cruel. You all act like you know her personally. You seem to know exactly the extent of her back injury, her consumption of food, and what she is eating. Do you have a hidden camera in her house? No? Then stop. Because you really don’t know her or her life. I hope she gets the assistance she needs, especially for her kid. Don’t let the haters get you down. There are always going to be cruel and ignorant people in this world. The trick is to ignore them and focus on the positive. Good luck!!!!

You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.
    Romans 2:1 | NIV |
Do not judge, or you too will be judged.
    Matthew 7:1 | NIV |
A person may think their own ways are right,
but the Lord weighs the heart.
    Proverbs 21:2 | NIV |
Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister.
    Romans 14:13 | NIV |
But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken.
    Matthew 12:36 | NIV |
“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?”
    Matthew 7:3 | NIV |
Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.
    Luke 6:37 | NIV |
Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To their own master, servants stand or fall. And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand.
    Romans 14:4 | NIV |
“No weapon forged against you will prevail,
and you will refute every tongue that accuses you.
This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord,
and this is their vindication from me,”
    declares the Lord.
    Isaiah 54:17 | NIV |
All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law.
    Romans 2:12 | NIV |
Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.
    Hebrews 13:4 | NIV |
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
    John 3:17 | NIV |
The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted them.
    Romans 14:3 | NIV |
Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.
    Colossians 2:16-17 | NIV |
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.
    Romans 8:1-2 | NIV |
No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.
    1 Corinthians 9:27 | NIV |
Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.
    John 3:18 | NIV |
    My soul yearns for you in the night;
in the morning my spirit longs for you.
When your judgments come upon the earth,
the people of the world learn righteousness.
    Isaiah 26:9 | NIV |
Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
    Mark 16:16 | NIV |
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
    Romans 6:23 | NIV |
Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple “Yes” or “No.” Otherwise you will be condemned.

you people who have made fun of me and stared at me in disgust is the reason I did not take my child to places like water parks and make memories between a Mom and Son. Yes I know this does not have anything to do with the story but it is a good platform and will maybe get you people to think of how cruel you can be towards heavy people and the insecurities you can give us. I know it was my choice to not take my son to places like a water park but you need to understand how the teasing and bullying can affect a person. The bullying does not just go for heavy people but no one should be bullied, you never know if what you say is the last straw and that person goes home and commits suicide because they can not live with the emotional trauma anymore. Please keep your opinions to yourself. It should not matter what any one looks like.We are all human beings and deserve to be treated with dignity, compassion, and respect. Alot of prejudice is taught by our parents, some not, but please let’s end the cycle.

I know it was my choice to not take my son to places like a water park but you need to understand how the teasing and bullying can affect a person. The bullying does not just go for heavy people but no one should be bullied, you never know if what you say is the last straw and that person goes home and commits suicide because they can not live with the emotional trauma anymore. not matter what any one looks like.We are all human beings and deserve to be treated with dignity, compassion, and respect. Alot of prejudice is taught by our parents, some not, but please let’s end the cycle.

I am a family that is being affected by the food stamp issue. I cannot work because of health issues (kidney removal, Endometriosis, etc). I have struggled with my weight since I was 15. For my height, I’m classified as overweight. I work with my doctor to make sure I can do whatever exercise I can do that won’t strain my body but keeps me healthy. We have one income coming in from work, one income coming in from renting our basement, and pending an income from Social Security. We are not worried about the food issue for my kids. We budget, we coupon clip, we do everything we can to make sure that the kids, nor ourselves, go without. Yes, in light of the issue, we had to re-budget a few things that were nice to have but not a necessity during the rough period so that way we can ensure that our family is taken care of. It is really not that hard to do. There is also no need to share it on public media when everyone already knows how hard it is. I think it’s sad that a mom of one kid is taking to the news to share her troubles when some of us are moms of two, three, four, and more kids. We make do and we don’t complain. So understand that when you share your story like that, you may get some comments that you don’t like. Some are not meaning to be rude but being honest. Others, well, yeah it’s considered bullying. But then again, you have to remember that first amendment that we have. They are entitled to say what they wish even if it hurts. That’s when you get tough and tell yourself that you know the truth and it doesn’t matter what they say. Cause honestly, if you are that comfortable with who you are, it really doesn’t matter what they say.

I get about $115. a month in food stamps for me and my granddaughter. We got Feb. Stamps in Jan. and were told to budget. Not sure about March. Food stamps are supposed to supplement your food budget. I have learned to shop wisely. I’m retired so I have time to check store ads. If chicken breasts are on sale I buy extra and freeze them. I pretty much only buy what is on sale. I have thyroid disease and I am not overweight. Blood tests every 6 months. I live in Colorado and there are food banks everywhere. My personal opinion is that government doesn’t give a damn about us. Senate and Congress wages are like $150,000 or more a year. My annual salary is below $20,000. Did they really get it? NO!!!! I blame both parties. Let’s pay them minimum wage.
