On Saturday, Louisiana 21-year-old Dakota Theriot allegedly killed his parents, his girlfriend, and his girlfriend’s father and brother in two separate shootings.
Police said he first shot his parents, Elizabeth and Keith Theriot, at their home near Baton Rogue before driving about 30 miles to the home of his girlfriend, Summer Ernest, CNN reports.
He shot her along with her 17-year-old brother, Tanner Ernest, and their father, Billy Ernest. Theriot then fled the area to Virginia.
Summer and Tanner’s mom, Rhonda Champagne, read early reports about the shooting on social media and shared a news story to her Facebook page.
She had no idea her children were involved until someone pulled up at her door, she told WAFB.
“I had just reposted it to Facebook. I go outside, a truck pulls up and a man says ‘are you Rhonda?’”
The mom’s surviving child, 16-year-old Hunter Ernest, said they were having a pleasant morning that very quickly took a turn for the worse. He told WBRZ:
“Before that we were happy, and then the police told my mom to sit down, and they told her what happened, and she was broken. We were broken.”
The mom said she doesn’t understand what Theriot could have gained from killing her family. She told WBRZ.
“Why? It’s senseless, my babies died for nothing. Their daddy died for nothing. What was so important that you had to have, that you took them?”
Theriot was arrested in Richmond County, Virginia on Sunday after fleeing Louisiana. He traveled more than 1,000 miles to an area where he has family members.
He is expected to face five first-degree murder charges at a minimum, according to the Washington Post.
The 21-year-old was living with Billy and Summer Ernest for several weeks before the shootings after he lost his place to stay.
A GoFundMe has been started to raise money for the Ernest family’s funeral expenses. It has raised over $10,000 so far.
