Heather Unruh is a former television news anchor and mom of two. On November 8, with her daughter by her side, Unruh told the world that “House of Cards” actor Kevin Spacey sexually assaulted her son when he was 18 years old.

According to Unruh, the assault took place at the Club Car restaurant and bar on Nantucket Island in Massachusetts.

She described the July 2016 night in detail:

“The victim, my son, was a starstruck, straight, 18-year-old man, who had no idea that the famous actor was an alleged sexual predator or that he was about to become his next victim.”

Unruh told reporters that prior to the assault taking place, her son told Spacey that he was of legal age to drink, even though he was only 18. Unruh pointed out that that didn’t mean the actor had a right to assault him.

She said “there was no consent”:

“Kevin Spacey bought him drink, after drink, after drink and when my son was drunk, Spacey made his move and sexually assaulted him. And I want to make it clear, this was a criminal act. The room at the Club Car was very crowded, it was dimly lit, Spacey stuck his hand inside my son’s pants and grabbed his genitals. This was completely unexpected. And my son’s efforts to shift his body to remove Spacey’s hand were only momentarily successful, the violation continued.”

Unruh said Spacey’s actions made her son “panic” and “freeze.” Following the assault, the actor invited Unruh’s son to another party:

“He was intoxicated and Kevin Spacey was insisting that he come with him to a private, after-hours, party to drink even more. Fortunately, Kevin Spacey left briefly to use the bathroom and when he was out of sight, a concerned woman quickly came to my very shaken son’s side and asked if he was okay. She told him to run and he did. He ran as fast as he could, all the way to his grandmother’s house.”

The visibly emotional Unruh continued by saying:

“Nothing could have prepared my son for how that sexual assault would make him feel as a man. It harmed him and it can not be undone.”

In the press conference, Unruh told reporters that prior to her coming forward, her son filed a police report with the Nantucket police and “handed over evidence” that will aid in the investigation.

The mom said she would like to see Spacey serve time for his crimes:

“Shame on you for what you did to my son.”

She also revealed that she knows “one other person who was on Nantucket who was also a target of Spacey.”

According to the Boston Globe, the Club Car restaurant, where the incident allegedly took place, is now under different ownership. However, the new director of operations, Ty Costa, did release a statement regarding the alleged assault:

Unruh is a cherished member of our local Boston community and it’s difficult to imagine this unfolding national scandal would hit home here. Club Car is an iconic establishment on Nantucket Island. We purchased it after the close of the 2016 season, and therefore after this unfortunate incident. … We uphold the highest standards for safety and service. Underage drinking is prohibited at our restaurant. Our hearts go out to all the victims involved in the Kevin Spacey scandal and, of course, Ms. Unruh and her son.

Unruh told the media that her now 19-year-old son is “a very strong man.” While he is doing “his best to deal with it,” it will “always be there.”

Unruh’s son is not the first person to accuse Spacey of sexual assault in recent weeks.
