Michigan mom Carrie DeKlyen was eight weeks pregnant with her daughter when she got the news that her brain cancer had returned.

According to earlier reports, the mother of five suffered from glioblastoma, a malignant tumor that spread quickly. And doctors said she had few options to treat the illness.

In order to have her best shot at survival, doctors at the University of Michigan said that she should undergo chemotherapy and terminate her pregnancy.

But Carrie wasn’t willing to give up her baby’s life in order to save her own— even after doctors warned her that she would probably die from the illness without chemotherapy.

Her husband, Nick DeKlyen, told People magazine that he feared for her life:

“But it was Carrie’s decision and I said, ‘What do you want to do?’ She said, ‘We’re keeping it.’”

On September 6, the brave mother prematurely gave birth to her daughter, Life Lynn DeKlyen.

Carrie was just 24 weeks into her pregnancy when she gave birth to the 1 pound, 4 ounce baby girl.

Just three days after successfully bringing her sixth child into the world, Carrie passed away from her illness, according to The Washington Post.

And on Thursday, the family revealed more devastating news. After just two weeks of living, little Life passed away, too.

The family took to Facebook to share the news.

They wrote:

It is with great sadness and a absolutely broken heart that I tell you Life Lynn passed away last night. Carrie is now rocking her baby girl. I have no explanation of why this happened, but I do know Jesus loves us and someday we will know why. The grief we feel is almost unbearable, please be praying for our family.

Psalms 73:26
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever

Carrie’s sister, Sonya Nelson, told The Associated Press that the baby sometimes had bad days, and “took a turn for the worse.”

She passed away on Wednesday, at the University of Michigan Hospital. Nelson said:

“Maybe Carrie needed her. It is comforting for us to know that she went home to be with Carrie.”

It’s currently unclear what caused the baby girl to pass away.
