After a mother and father were told to expect the birth of their third daughter, you can imagine the shock they both experienced when they learned they were given wrong information.

Nancy Ray is a mom blogger, a photographer, and the host of a podcast called “Work and Play.”

She’s now opening up about the moment immediately after giving birth to her third child that she learned their daughter was actually their son.

So apparently this photo is going a bit viral, but most don’t know the full story! So in case you missed it, here it is in a nutshell! April 14: Surprise! I’m pregnant! June 9: You’re having your third girl! We were gender surprised with our first two babies but my husband insisted to know if he was having three girls so he could mentally prepare haha! December 8: Snow and ice storm shuts down raleigh. I am positive I’ll give birth without electricity at home. Thankfully that did not happen. December 10: Baby girl is due December 12: I get the stomach bug all day & my husband is diagnosed with 2 strains of the flu that night (and let me just say puking while 40w2d pregnant is a unique kind of awful) December 13: I drive to the birth center with intense contractions with my mom at 11am and meet my hubby there (he spent the night at his moms because #flu). Two hours later, my baby was born with me halfway in the tub! 15 minutes later, we went to cut the chord and I said… “WHAT IS THAT?!? Is this a boy baby!!? Indeed, it was a boy! 🤣💙 My husband @willrray quickly lifted his leg to check and then proceeded to literally fall on the floor. (The picture above is him checking!) I will forever advocate for birth photography because this is one of my very favorite photos of all time. Thank you @laurenjollyphoto !! 💕 #beaufortandmama #beaufortraytoday Full blogpost is in a link in my profile with all the pics from that day! nancyray.com/blog

Then came the day Ray went to their center to give birth.

The now-mom of three continued:

December 13: I drive to the birth center with intense contractions with my mom at 11am and meet my hubby there (he spent the night at his moms because #flu).

Ray further explained on her blog that while laboring at the center, she almost abandoned her plan of having an unmedicated birth after doing it twice before with her older children:

I was DONE.

“I want to go to the hospital and get an epidural. I don’t want to be a hero today. I want some help. I can’t do this.”

I’ll never forget saying those words at my weakest. I was dead serious. My midwife said that she wanted to call the hospital to see their flu policy before we made a final decision. I was laying in the bed, Will was by my side, and the combination of being sick for 24 hours with a stomach bug, completely dehydrated, and having intense contractions all felt like too much.

She continued:

Thank God for His strength, because He gets 100% of the credit for what happened next.

Rebecca came back and told me, “We can transfer you if you want, but your husband cannot go with you. They aren’t allowing anyone with the flu into the hospital.”

Without hesitation I looked at her and said, “Then I’m not going.”

According to Ray, just two hours after arriving at the birthing center, their third child “was born with me halfway in the tub!”

Then 15 minutes after that, Ray and her husband went to cut the chord when they both got the surprise of a lifetime:

I said… “WHAT IS THAT?!? Is this a boy baby!!? Indeed, it was a boy!

My husband Will quickly lifted his leg to check and then proceeded to literally fall on the floor. (The picture above is him checking!) I will forever advocate for birth photography because this is one of my very favorite photos of all time. Thank you @laurenjollyphoto !!

The couple ultimately named their son Beaufort.

Ray explained that it was the name they had picked out if they were to have a boy during their first two pregnancies.

Beautiful.
