An Arkansas family is being praised for their selflessness after they purchased every shoe from a local Payless store.
According to Jernigan, the idea initially formed after her daughter asked to buy a pair of “The Avengers” shoes for a boy in her class:
“She has the biggest heart, and she said, ‘There is a boy in my class that loves avengers, and his shoes are too small, could you buy him these?,’ and I was like ‘of course.'”
That’s when Jernigan’s half-jokingly asked the clerk about potentially buying the rest of the shoes in the store:
“As I was checking out I just said ‘how much for the rest of the shoes in the store,’ almost joking and I could see the clerks, her face, her wheels start to turn and she finished checking me out. She said ‘can I have your number?'”
Eventually, the store manager called Jernigan’s back to tell her she could buy out the store if she still wanted to.
The total number of shoes the Jernigans took home with them that day— 1,500.
Now, the family is throwing a back to school event on August 10 in the Alma Middle School Gym to help get the shoes to those who need them most. As KSFM reports, the Kibler Baptist Church will also be giving out school supplies at the bash.
The mom said she’s thrilled her daughter’s heart was in the right place that day in May because now they can help out even more kids in their Alma, Arkansas community:
“I always tell my kids, if you ask them what they want to be when they grow up they say be kind, and so I don’t care what they do in life as long as they are kind and good people. And so it just reiterates to me that their hearts are in the right place and if it’s in the right place they can do amazing things.”
