When Robin McKinzie disciplined her child, she used an extension cord as her weapon of choice.
According to WMC in Memphis, Tennessee, McKinzie told authorities she used the cord to beat and choke her 10-year-old son, Jaheem, as a way of punishing him.
Eventually, Jaheem became fed up.
McKinzie told police Jaheem tried to take matters into his own hands and committed suicide. According to WMC:
She then told officers the boy got angry, ran into the kitchen, and stabbed himself in the chest with a kitchen knife.
Jaheem was quickly rushed to the hospital, but on Oct. 28, the fourth-grader at Cornerstone Denver Prep in Tennessee died as a result of his injuries.
Neighbor Traimaine King told WMC the news of the boy’s death was hard to hear:
“My heart is hurting from that, because I used to see him all the time.”
The boy’s family told the Associated Press that Jaheem had been “acting out at school” and struggled with mental health issues. McKinzie’s sister, Tonya Bailey, said the mom struggled to care for her son, adding that Jaheem had been off his medication and had been suicidal for sometime.
According to Bailey, mental illness ran in their family. She said she tried to tell her sister it was OK to get her son the help he needed.
Bailey asked the public not to judge McKinzie:
“Just lift her up and that’s all that you need to do is pray and ask God to move on this situation and let the truth be known, and that God give her strength because he was only 10 years old.”
Jaheem’s death caught the attention of famed raper and Tennessee native Yo Gotti. According to Fox 13 in Memphis, the rapper plans to help Jaheem’s family by paying for the 10-year-old’s funeral.
McKinzie has been charged with aggravated child abuse and endangerment. She has yet to be charged with Jaheem’s death. She currently being held on a $100,000 bond.
