It was Bruce Arlie Harvey’s job to track down sexual predators. In his private life, however, he was exactly the kind of person he hunted.

As WTVR News reports, the 41-year-old from Reva, Virginia, was a detective for the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. His most recent assignment was the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

Harvey held a prominent role in the community. Not only was he in law enforcement, but he was active in the school and gave karate lessons. But for years, he was betraying the trust of the parents who allowed him to spend time with their children.

According to the Culpeper Star-Exponent, Harvey allegedly made sexual advances to the girls while they were students in his karate class. Later, he would allegedly sexually exploit them while giving them private karate lessons and traveling to karate tournaments out of state.

U.S. Attorney Rick A. Mountcastle told WTVR the abuse went on for two years for one of the victims and four years for the other:

“Harvey abused his positions of trust as a law enforcement officer and as a karate instructor to sexually exploit two of his female karate students beginning when each was approximately 13 years old.”

When Harvey was arrested on May 3, investigators found a video from 2007 that showed one victim performing a sexual act with Harvey in his home.

On Aug. 14, Harvey pleaded guilty in federal court to one count of possession of child pornography and multiple counts of both transporting a minor across state lines with the intent to engage in criminal sexual acts and interstate travel with minors with the intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct.

Mountcastle told the Star-Exponent that Harvey’s crimes are a warning to all parents that anyone can be a predator:

“This case shows that child predators infiltrate every aspect of our society, including law enforcement. Parents should always be on guard and should always remember that child predators may gravitate to vocations and places where they can occupy positions of trust and have easy access to children.”

He added there is no longer a statute of limitations for such crimes and that they will prosecute predators, no matter how long ago the abuse took place.

Special Agent Adam S. Lee of the FBI told WTVR:

“Harvey was every parent’s worst nightmare. A multi-victim predator camouflaging himself in positions of trust. School resource officer. Child exploitation investigator. Karate instructor.”

He summed it up in one word: “Despicable.”
