Canadian actress Meghan Markle, 36, has been at the center of a media circus since it was revealed that she started dating Prince Harry, 32, in 2016.
The “Suits” star seemed to be living every girl’s fairy tale dream, but Markle and her family were hounded by paparazzi when public interest around the little-known actress’s romance with her dreamy prince started to grow, according to Cosmopolitan.Michael Tran/Getty Images
Her mother allegedly had to hide inside her home as photographers lurked outside, and Meghan has become one of the main targets of tabloid gossip.
It got so bad that Prince Harry had to release a statement in November of 2016, begging for the “wave of abuse and harassment” to stop. The statement read:
“Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her. It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm.”
So it’s no surprise that Markle and her royal beau have kept their relationship under wraps. But now, Markle has decided to speak out about her budding romance for the first time.Ben A. Pruchnie/Stringer/Getty Images
In the October 2017 issue of Vanity Fair, Markle opened up about her romance — and all the challenges that have come along with it. She told the magazine that it hasn’t gotten any easier to deal with the chaos:
“It has its challenges, and it comes in waves — some days it can feel more challenging than others. And right out of the gate it was surprising the way things changed. But I still have this support system all around me, and, of course, my boyfriend’s support.”
The actress said that she dealt with the tabloid drama by turning a blind eye to the “noise.” She said:
“I don’t read any press. I haven’t even read press for Suits. The people who are close to me anchor me in knowing who I am. The rest is noise.”
Markle, who allegedly met Harry through a close friend’s wife, told Vanity Fair that they managed to keep their romance hidden for several months before the news broke:
“We were very quietly dating for about six months before it became news, and I was working during that whole time, and the only thing that changed was people’s perception. Nothing about me changed. I’m still the same person that I am, and I’ve never defined myself by my relationship.”
But regardless of the struggles, Markle said that their romance has prevailed. For the first time ever, the actress dropped the “L-bomb” that everyone has been waiting for. She told Vanity Fair:
“I can tell you that at the end of the day I think it’s really simple. We’re two people who are really happy and in love.”
Markle said she now hopes that people will wait for them to come forward with their “love story,” and allow them to experience their whirlwind romance in peace. She said:
“We’re a couple. We’re in love. I’m sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time. This is for us. It’s part of what makes it so special, that it’s just ours. But we’re happy. Personally, I love a great love story.”
There’s no word yet if Harry has any plans to make Markle a member of the royal family.
But if he takes any inspiration from his big brother, Prince William, who just announced he is expecting baby No. 3 with the Duchess of Cambridge, then there could be wedding bells in the near future.
