Matthew McConaughey isn’t shy when it comes to sharing his faith in public. The 47-year-old actor has made it clear that in his life, only a few things remain at the top of his priority list: God and his family.

And almost every time the father of three is on a public platform, he makes sure the people around him know that.

For McConaughey, last Monday was no exception. The actor appeared on “Good Morning America” to discuss his upcoming role in the film “The Dark Tower,” and he made sure to include his faith — as well as how he tried to apply it to every aspect of his life — in the conversation.

After “GMA” host Michael Strahan wished McConaughey’s eldest son, Levi, a happy birthday, he mentioned how he “loved” the boy’s name.

McConaughey graciously dove into the background of his son’s name, saying it comes from his favorite verse in the Bible, Matthew 6:22, which reads: “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.”

He told Strahan that he and his wife of five years, Camila Alves, were inspired to keep the name “Matthew” in their family tree but were willing to get creative, saying:

“Levi’s another name for Matthew in the Bible. So we had talked about possibly Matthew Jr. if we had a boy. And my favorite book in the Bible is Matthew 6:22.”

When their son was first born, the new parents were hardly thinking too much about what his name would be, but McConaughey said they were given a sign:

“We find out he’s a boy when he’s born. You’re not thinking about the name, right? An hour later, the doctor comes up, and he hands you that card that you fill out: ‘Blank was born at 6:22 p.m.'”

They knew instantly what they would write down on that form, saying to the doctor, “It’s Levi.”

McConaughey has a history of biblical names in his family — that’s why no one ever refers to him as “Matt” instead of “Matthew.”

Judging by the joy he had while telling the story of his son’s name, it’s clear he plans on honoring that tradition for generations to come.
