“Law and Order: SUV” actors Mariska Hargitay and Peter Hermann met while on the set of the TV series 17 years ago.
Now, Hargitay is opening up publicly to People about why she broke down crying on their first date. The 55-year-old actress described the magical moment as divine intervention.
The actress said for their first date, Hermann invited her to attend a church service with him. She explained:
“We went to church together, and it was like getting hit with a lightning bolt.”
Hargitay recalled it being love at first sight when she first met her husband.
“I just started sobbing. Peter thought I was crying because I was so moved by the service. No, it was because I was just overwhelmed, realizing he was the one.”
She told “Today’s” Jenna Bush Hager and Savannah Guthrie that she was overwhelmed because she had finally met the man of her dreams.
“I cried because I was feeling something that I’d never felt before, but I kind of knew what it was and I always say people, well, you know, when you’re a little girl, your parents and your grandparents and everyone goes, ‘When you’re in love, you’ll know.’ And I did. And before I did I’d never felt that.”
The “SUV” actress had previously been engaged, but it wasn’t until after her date with Hermann that she told her closest friend she had met the one. Hargitay recalled to People:
“I told her, ‘This is it. This is the man I’m going to marry.'”
“I never knew I’d so often be reminded on this journey that I married the right one.”
Hargitay and Hermann have now been married for 15 years. They have three children, August, 12, Amaya, 8, and Andrew, 7, together.
And according to Hermann, it’s “laughter” that has been the secret to their longlasting relationship.
