A New Jersey man stopped his girlfriend mid-marathon to propose on Sunday, and an outpouring of “awwws” followed the romantic gesture.

Kaitlyn Curran was on mile 16 of her first-ever New York City marathon when her boyfriend of four years, firefighter Dennis Galvin, popped the question, reports CBS.

In a video captured by Galvin’s cousin, Kathleen Figueroa, the firefighter can be seen dropping down to one knee to surprise his girlfriend with a ring.

Watch the proposal below:

Figueroa told the station:

“People in the race were slowing down to take pictures. It was indescribable just to be there and see it all was amazing.

She cried a little bit, said yes, hugged him and then said ‘OK, I have to go finish my race.”

The runner made her way through Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and entered midtown Manhattan when Galvin asked Curran for her hand in marriage.

She “had no idea” it was coming.

Curran completed the race with a time of 4 hours and 24 minutes. Afterward, the couple met at the finish line in Central Park. CBS Evening News tweeted:

She ended the day with a medal around her neck and a ring on her finger.

The video quickly went viral. However, the proposal was a cause of concern for some people. Commenters wrote on Twitter in response to the post:

It couldn’t wait until the finish line because..?

Raises hand. His male ego was too small to let her get all of the attention for even a few hours.

As someone who was proposed to at the NYC Marathon AFTER I finished, I would 100% say no if it was during.

One commenter wrote:

Maybe he just knew that the time wasn’t that big a deal to her and she loved him so she said “Yes” and thats all there is too it. Seems like some people who aren’t married are getting well upset about these two people being busy with their awful happiness.

Figueroa said “they’re both very happy” and looking forward to the wedding.
