Police believe a Washington man lived with his parents’ corpses for nearly five days before killing himself as deputies were attempting a welfare check at the family’s home.
As KIRO7 reports, investigators believe Matthew Ficken, 34, shot his mother and father in the head on the evening of January 10 or the morning of January 11.
The King County Sheriff’s Office said:
Detectives believe a possible motive for the murders occurred when Matthew was told his mother was moving out of state and he would have to find his own place. His mother gave Matthew more than enough money to pay for his first and last month deposit on an apartment and additional expenses.”
People reports deputies approached the Ficken’s home on January 15, after receiving calls from relatives who were worried about the family after being unable to contact them for days.
When deputies entered the home they discovered Matthew’s body, as well as the bodies of Lorraine Ficken, 68, and Robert Ficken, 72.
As People reports, Lorraine, a realtor, and Robert, an author, had been divorced for nearly a decade but continued to live together along with their son Matthew.
We are truly saddened to have lost one of our own. Lorraine Ficken, a longtime broker of our Issaquah branch, was one of the victims of a murder-suicide that took place in Sammamish. https://t.co/SePFLUNkiw pic.twitter.com/qqkbdfX2kt

Further, Lorraine’s employer Coldwell Banker Bain in Issaquah released a statement confirming her plans to retire and move to a new state.
Marilyn Green, the office’s principal managing broker, said:
We’re still in shock and our hearts and thoughts go out to Lorraine’s family and real estate team during this horrible time. Lorraine was one of the nicest people we’ve ever known – so kind and warm-hearted. She was one of our top producers, and served her clients without fault. We have been hearing from so many clients who are in tears over this tragedy. It is a huge loss for so many and Lorraine will be greatly missed…Lorraine was starting to look toward retirement next year and had recently purchased a home in Oregon near her family. She was so excited… we are simply heartsick over the loss.”
Officials are unsure if an actual argument occurred between Matthew and his parents prior to their murder.
