On November 24, a 29-year-old Indiana man was put in charge of watching his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son while she was away at work.
Now, he’s facing charges for allegedly abusing the toddler.
According to WRTV, Dennis Tannen was babysitting the child when he called his girlfriend just part of the way into her shift.
He told the mom that there had been an “incident” with the baby boy and that she should come home. The mother arrived to find her boyfriend “outside smoking a cigarette.”
Inside, she found her son with severe burns to his face. She said it appeared his skin was falling off, Fox 59 reports.
The toddler was taken to Riley Children’s Hospital where doctors treated him for “highly suspicious” burns and bruising on his chest.
He had burns covering both his face and body.
Police questioned Tannen, who initially claimed that he left the toddler alone in the bathroom for “10 seconds” and that the child turned on the hot water by himself.
After further questioning, Tannen later admitted that he turned the water on “full hot” and ran the child under it after he soiled his diaper while the boyfriend was waiting for an important call.
The 29-year-old said he was agitated and also ran the boy’s face under the water.
Tannen said the bruising occurred when the toddler slipped from his grasp while he was running him under the hot water and had to be grabbed by the chest.
The Bloomington resident was arrested and charged with aggravated battery and neglect of a dependent.
The mother has not spoken out publicly regarding the incident.
