HGTV star and father of six Luke Caldwell opened up about adoption and placing children with special needs in loving homes.

The co-host of “Boise Boys” told People that he was so blessed to welcome his two healthy biological children Brighten, 8, and Elias, 10, but wanted to give a family to other children who wouldn’t otherwise have a forever home.

The home renovation designer, who adopted four children from the same orphanage in China, told the publication about his earlier orphanage work experience in India. He said:

“I just remember thinking, ‘I can’t believe these kids don’t have parents, they don’t have anyone to take care of them.’ It broke my heart, even as a 12-year-old.”

Since that time, Luke and his wife, Miranda, have adopted Morris, 11, Tucker, 9, Darla, 7, and Ezra, 10.

Luke told Parade magazine:

“We felt like we really hit the lottery with a boy and girl. We knew that there were so many kids who didn’t have homes and didn’t have families, and we wanted to consider adopting. We came to the conclusion that we wanted to adopt kids who most likely wouldn’t ever be adopted. That became our focus — giving a child a home and a family.”

The 40-year-old said he left India completely changed, and it was hard for him to understand why someone would abandon their child.

Then years later, Luke’s wife had a dream about a little Chinese boy and started praying for kids without families while searching adoption websites.

She said she connected with a little boy with spina bifida, and eight months later, she felt an urge to check his birthday, which was November 17.

Miranda recalled:

“‘Remember that day eight months ago that I had that vision? I looked back at your tour schedule, and that was November 17.’ I said he’s our boy. We knew that he would be our son.”

The couple went on to adopt more children with special needs. Luke’s “Boise Boys” co-star, Clint Robertson, said:

“What I love about Luke is his heart. He believes that every child should have the love of a family. And you better look out — he’s going to make sure every child in the world has a family.”
